Old MOT test history

Here's something useful that prospective buyers could use.

If you are considering a car that has a less than complete history, ask the owner for the number of the current MOT test certificate. It's on the top left of the form. Failing that, get the reference from the V5.

Then, go to the direct.gov website. Enter the reg number and whichever of the above numbers you have been able to obtain, and it will give you the car's MOT history going back to 2005, when the computerised scheme started.

It's not complete, but came in very handy today when I was looking into a car which looked OK, drove well, been MOTed in Feb and had been worked on by a specialist & recommended mechanic. It was a 2000 reg Merc - but the earliest MOT test was for 2009. Begging the question, where were the tests for 2005-2008?

If someone is aware of glitches in the system - possibly caused by plate changes (which had occurred with this car), I would be interested to know.
