Fitting an Elise steering Wheel

Postby enndee on Thu 04.02.2010, 16:34

Sorry I don't have access to my car until the weekend to have a look for myself, so can anyone tell me if it's possible to change the steering wheel without having to remove the entire assembly. I am replacing the standard wheel with an Elise wheel I have just bought from Ailwyn. In other words, is it possible to get access to the bolts (and nuts?) on the boss by just removing the column shroud? I don't have a puller so I am just trying to avoid going down that route

You probably don't even have to remove the shroud. Push and twist the horn button, and it should pop out (noisy, I know). Then you'll have access to various screws and things. It's in the workshop manual.

dont forget.....

leave the nut still attached but undone when pulling the wheel off......
if you remove the nut you will tend to smack yourself in the face with the wheel rather hard...when it comes of th spline....:).....

Yes, but that whole excercise with the puller etc., is what I am trying to avoid, hence the question about getting access to the boss bolts!

thats what I was trying to say.......
you cant get the wheel off and keep the boss fixed....
you'll need to take it all off to fit the wheel to the boss.....

Bit of slotted channel / Uni strut with an M10 Zeebedee worked a treat. M10 bolt with a point on the bottom fitted in the end of the steering coloum perfect!

Mind you didn't cost me anything and the puller I found was only £12 so didnt save me much £££ lol

Thanks to everyone for your input - I will have to scrounge a puller from somewhere then! :censored:
