Convert Elan m100 to LEFT HAND DRIVE

Postby BRYAN GORE » Thu 12.02.2015, 18:52

Hello everybody, You may have read my first two mails, you will know I live in SPAIN, I bought my 1991 Elan on Ebay middle of 2014 , the car is in Carlisle being fettled and sorted before I bring it down to Spain in the not to distant future
If all goes well and I love the car as much as I hope to, I will want to convert to LHD and will need advise and help.
I have some experience as I have in past years converted to LhD my MG Midget 1972 and after that which was very successful , converted my Mini Cooper S replica to LHD that went well too. Both these cars have now been sold.
I realise a modern car like the Elan will be more complicated but the were many LHD versions built for US and Europe
so just maybe it would be possible? Any help and advise would be gratfully recieved. if your asking why I just did not buy one locally, Lotus is a rare marque here and the Elan very rare and very expensive.there are 3 for sale at the moment all between 15 and 20,000 euro, Thanks in advance for any comments, regards Bryan

Very interesting, looking forward to hearing how you get on.

At those prices I might convert mine and sell to the European market - a business opportunity maybe :bananasex:

The teqnicle bit is the easy bit compared with registring for a Spanish registraion m need full authorised engineers report
full inspection and about 1000 pounds costs, but, you may get a historic reg which gets you very cheap insurance and mot every 5 years, costs about the same again!

Bryan (and Pete!),

Before you get too excited at the prospect, it is important to know that whilst the chassis and major parts are the same for LHD/RHD cars, the actual bodytub is molded differently (on the bulkhead) and it isn't just a 'simple' swap like the MG & Mini :?

I've no doubt that it *could* be done, but it would need a lot of work (and then you'd still have to source things like the dash, steering rack, pedal box, wiper motors etc etc).

If it is a serious proposition, then Lotus did have a LHD bodytub listed on their aftersales list last time I looked, which would be one way to go.

Another thought is to obtain a smashed-up LHD car to cannibalise for parts, and see how much surgery would be required to cut out the bulkhead and swap them over - all in all, I wouldn't think it is an easy way to do it, and you'd be better off just using it as it is, or selling it and buying a LHD one.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually.....

go on - click this link - you know you want to!

Dave is wright,
An Elan is not an Elise, which is simple to change to LHD.

I tried the same on an Esprit 1992, and had to built it back together as it was before as a RHD.

The body is so different that it is almost really impossible to change this.

Better to look out for a 'worn' LHD and make best of both worlds to one.

From time to time you can find some cheap ones in Belgium.

Here some examples:

http://www.kapaza.be/nl/lotus/lotus-ela ... 417149.htm A real price for this in Belgium would be about 5.000 to 6.000 euro. Send in a bid, it has been for sale for a long time now.

Hi Brian,

Did you pursue the RHD to LHD conversion? I'm struggling to find a reasonable priced LHD M100.

Hi Dan,

It depends on year and condition. I'm looking for around 6,000 euros but would go (much) higher for the right car.

Off topic but worth a try. Is it possible to use parts from a LHD steering rack to refurb a RHD rack? Got a very leaky rack and a spare used rack as a possible replacement, but unsure of its true condition.
