Steering Play

Postby Simon_P » Mon 23.03.2015, 14:08

Hi All,

I have play in the steering rack in the straight ahead position. I've tried adjusting it out but the rack binds if I remove the play.

Does anyone know of a good rebuilder, or have a spare SE rack that isn't worn in the straight ahead position, or even one of the S2 racks bought from the aftersales a couple of years ago.

Thanks,

Simon

Reading another excellent article by Dave Pink on changing the steering rack.

Do I actually need to remove the raft? I have access to a lift.

Thanks,

Simon

I have just taken apart a crashed car there is a uj joint connected to the rack are you convinced it is the rack not the uj you would not notice it when turning but it would wander in the straight ahead position. I seem to recall i had a similar problem years ago with my excel and it was the steering uj just a thought.

If you can't fix it with a hammer it's electrical.

Hi Andy,

I checked the UJ and it is good. Adjusted the play out of the rack, then it was tight either side of straight - pretty sure it is the rack.
