Peugeot 309 GTi.....

I know! :D , Not very likely but you wont know if you don't ask!, looking for one of these for a project, would take almost any condition but has to be a GTi version, anybody know of one, maybe laid up in a garden / garage and unloved in need of some tender TLC?, will travel so distance not a problem. :cheers:

There's a Series 2 J reg on eBay at present. Not apparently a project, but might be worth a look. In fact, if you don't have it, I might; I had an H reg new, and loved it. :burnout: :burnout:

Hard to imagine much nostalgia for the 309. Funily enough, I saw a mk1 just last week in Sainsburys in Salisbury, first sighting in over a decade.

I had a top of the range GRD (Aztec Gold J Reg) for several years, someone, and I don't recall how, put a basin sized dent in the drivers door and the quote for repair was horrendous so I spent the next 2yrs visiting every scrap yard I could find to replace it, pissed me off Everytime I went near it; leaking sunroof didn't help enamour me either! Never did find one, eventually sold it for 306 Sedan.

They were, as suggested above, rare even then, your going to need some luck methinks.

Have to disagree, Pete; the GTI was a great car. Three things wrong with yours:

It's all subjective of course, the diesel was very efficient, albeit without a turbo it was like pulling teeth under acceleration, and I put a 100k miles on it in a short time. The Gold was a very muted shade (unlike the glaring colour of the Mk1) which I rather liked but 'as rare as rocking horse ....'. As for not being a GTI it was a performance upgrade on my earlier Skoda and top of the range in most other aspect than performance.

Frankly though, it was badly proportioned, there must be a ratio of l x h x w by which cars are aesthetically pleasing, the 205 had it, the 309 didn't!

The 309 is / was very much a marmite car, personally not so keen on the more door version, in 3 door GTi form in the right color (Miami blue or the limited edition Goodwood GTi) I always thought they had a cool understated look, they also handled great, better than the 205 in my opinion (had a pile of both 205's and 309's back in the day), in fact Silverstone had a fleet of school track and rally 309's in the 90's which were highly praised for their track manners.

Anyway, if someone can provide information leading to the purchase of said car I will provide a finders gift of any Elan EPDM hood or door seal you want (except falling pillar as none), got a nice limited stock of the new concept header seals 8), right start asking around :D .

Someone up my road had a 309, but not seen it for a few months. H reg, grey, looked in really good nick but pretty sure it wasn't a GTI. I wanted a 306 cabriolet, saw one almost the exact same shade of purple as my Elan recently, the driver and I grinned at each other in mutual appreciation!

I did mate, its only a 3 door I would want really, unless it was mega cheap which that one aint :D, looking for something that ideally needs the engine chucked, got something else to go in there :wink: .

I have a Palacio coloured sleeping bag and a purple Doug Haston Alpiniste rucksack. I'm halfway there !

No Peugeot though Jamie. I was a VW Golf GTi man. Mk 2, 3 and 4 then I gave up as they got too lardy for my liking. Always wish I had an original GTi Mk 1 though :(

Ooh, do tell. Mi16 would be too straightforward. What about a VR6 Golf motor?

Jamie,

Did you ever get your 309GTI ?.
I had a couple when they were new, both for about 18 months. I was doing about 30K miles a year then.
The best handling car I have owned, I wish my SE handled that well. it was effortless.
Out of curiosity I looked a few years ago and couldn't find one.
They were kind of flimsy, but I suppose that kept them light.

Haven't found one as yet Colin, seen a couple which were too far gone but the owners still thought they were worth a fortune!. Good ones have went up in value quite a bit over the last year or so. Bought my first one in the early 90's from a car auction, not long after passing my test, it was the 1st "sporty" car I ever had, owned several through the 90's / 00's, including a Goodwood with an MI16 which we had as our track car and often used at Knockhill, they were great handling cars that's undeniable, better than the 205 GTi, owned several of those as well.

The last one I had was a rare Miami blue 3dr which I converted to a D Turbo to use as a daily driver!.
