Lotus Elan Central

We are considering taking the ferry to St Malo and a mini tour around Brittany in August. Anyone know what the traffic is like around that corner of France? With the school holidays is it a bad time?

I can't comment on August, but we have been in July - including Bastille Day, when the French hit the roads in big numbers...... that said, we didn't really see any traffic jams, and the road system is so good that there are always many ways to get to any destination.

Ive done the drive from Roscoff to Augan in 2 to 2 1/2 hours - a pleasant enough drive if you choose the routes off the motorways.

Loads of elan-friendly roads, villages, locations ..... and a great motor museum if you like that sort of thing.

Thanks Dave, that's useful info, giving us enough confidence to give it a go and start sorting the detail and booking things - hopefully not too late. What we didn't want, was to find that it was well known for very heavy traffic in the whole region, we want a relatively stress free break. Thanks.

Last time I went I got held up by an M100 or two

The West coast is usually one long traffic jam at the weekends during August. Our company had a site in Paris and we never had any meetings from mid July to the end of August - they were all on les grandes vacances.

No matter where you go in France (Paris excepted) it can’t be as bad as driving in England.

We usually get the over-night ferry from Newcastle to avoid driving through most of England, which is what we find to be the worst traffic on any trip south. We then arrive on the continent rested and happy, to drive on good and generally low traffic volume roads to wherever we’re headed. Brittany has lots to offer. You’ll love it.

I was in Normandy & Loire for 2 weeks 2016, taking in Tour de France & Le mans Classic. Never had any problems apart from getting through Rouen which is infamous.

Thanks everyone for the heads-up, I have just booked with Brittany ferries departing on 30 July. A while to wait, but I'll try to post a couple of pic on completion.

Now you’re making me think of where to take the Elan this summer. I’d better get the Newcastle ferry booked!

Back from a brief tour around Brittany, ferry to St Malo then about 400 mile drive in 4 days with a different hotel each night. The roads were great, very little traffic, no hold-ups, no tolls, hassle free motoring, top down throughout. Thoroughly recommended.

Glad you had a good time. So where did you go? Which towns? Any hotels you would recommend?
