WikiLEC now working!

Postby morciii » Fri 20.03.2015, 23:50

I have no idea if it's just me, or maybe the computer i am using, but today when i have been trying to open the Wiki i get this

Image

I have used the wiki in the past so i'm not entirely sure why it has been happening today. Is the Wiki page down at the moment or is it just me? :(

Doesn't get there at all for me. Looks like an issue.
I also don't get the LEC logo in the left of the top banner. I just get a large black box.
edit: Scrap the bit about the LEC logo. It was my router throwing a wobbly.

Don,

Thank you for your considerate question (no, I'm NOT taking the pi$$ when i say that).

I have just got back from a great LEC-attended Lotus Festival at Brands Hatch, which reminds me of why I am here and makes everything feel good.....

.....then whilst catching up on LEC I find various comments about WikiLec and its availability (which has concerned EVERYONE for quite a while).....

.... this was discussed at the weekend with people who know more about the 'system' than I do, and the problems currently encountered.

THERE IS NO QUICK FIX.

Maybe, until one is found, it is better to remove the link to the wiki and we are no worse off than before it existed?

I found a post on another thread which I will replicate (along with my response) for general information to those who may not have seen it - the information is relevant for this thread.....

Who is maintaining the WikiLEC site now?

Firstly, I wish to state that EVERYONE is well aware of the issue with WikiLec.

Secondly, EVERYONE complaining that the link doesn't work, and when will it be fixed is not helpful.

ANYONE who keeps saying that all it needs is fixing a link so it should be a 2 minute job - if you're such an expert, crack on and do it :poke:

ANYONE who wants to can get back every penny they have paid for access to the WikiLec whilst it is down.

Maybe you are right John - nobody can edit the header (well, that bit isn't correct, we can edit the header - that's the easy bit - the hard bit is guessing the IP address to which it should be diected - that information is NOT currently available to any of the active LEC members

As for your second accusation that nobody wants to, well, that is clearly not correct, but I would invite you to consider such comments before placing them into public as to whether they would be either helpful or inflamatory to the situation.

please be assured that those of us who care, are actually trying to resolve the issue, but without a crystal ball or a ouija board we do not have access to the required information to get imediate access, and a back-up version CAN be found at the old site (wikilec.com), but it does not encompass many recent articles which many of us have spent time compiling.

Ideally, there would be an immediatly available back-up, but that isn't the case.

Whilst it is easy to say "Why wasn't this done?" then i throw it over to whoever wishes to complain to say "Why didn't YOU do it?"

LEC is a free resourse, and I don't believe that ANYTHING that was in the Wiki isn't available elsewhere on the site by using the search facility - but it isn't as easy as having the information in one easy-to-find place - hence why it was set up to start with - i hope it can be re-built, but in the meantime, please bear with us - people are working on it.

I am not quite sure to understand what is the problem.
Is it the IP of the data that has been lost? Hopefully there must be a DNS history somewhere?
Of course if it was a shared server it's going to be more complicated since all we can have is the IP of 9600.org ... :/

As for the backup, here is what I found using web archive:
- latest (from April, so it probably is rather up to date since it's been a while that wikilec.9600.org has stopped working) http://web.archive.org/web/201604061550 ... /Main_Page (it seems that some pictures are missing but they might be mostly available in the older version at http://wikilec.com)
- different older versions: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://wikilec.9600.org/

If the old server cannot be found at least the data seems mostly available, and a script might even convert it back to a wiki formalism ready to inject in a new wiki server.
Or we can share the work load among a lot of volunteers here and convert by hand a couple of page each?

Gini,

'Waybackwhen' is a good archive which i have personally used for the past 8 years to find old stuff which has been changed....

...that is part of the issue - it is purely an archive, and cannot be altered, or updated.

But thank you for linking to it - it may help those who are looking for the most current information as it is more recent than wikilec.com.

The servers which host LEC are indeed shared servers, and I have no access to anything on them (but I know people who do) - however, the information to link to (for the WikiLEC) is not known to me, and there is no way that the server owners will allow access to their systems to find it that way (I know it can be physically done, and have been able to do so on other systems, but whilst it *could* be done, without the required permissions, it *won't* be done)

It may be easiest to copy the 'waybackwhen' site and paste it onto another server which could be linked to from our site, but again, I don't have the relevant access to do these things, and those who do may not have the time/knowledge to do it.

Whilst I (or anyone else with the technical knowledge), *could* replicate the WikiLEC elsewhere and publicise it on the forum, I have a moral problem with that, as it would not be the right thing to do - yes, i fully appreciate that by it's definition, no-one "owns" a Wiki entry, and it may be of benefit to everyone else, but I still won't do it 8)

Well the web archive is available for reading through HTTP so a script can be done to retrieve its content, that is not a real problem (or even better, one can even use a website copier like httrack http://www.httrack.com/ to get a local copy)
Then it would be a matter of writing a little script to get it back to a wiki formalism, I don't know the details but it is probably rather easy (at least for the text).

From a technical point of view, the only remaining question is ... where can it be sent back? Is there a problem with wikilec.com ? Why did the community stop to use it? (since it's an older version ... just a guess ^^)

Anyway, I don't really understand what is the moral problem of recovering lost data, it's not like someone stopped publishing it on purpose?!

Re: WikiLEC not working?

Gini,

I am quite happy that using the archived information to reform the WikiLEC is neither technically impossible or even difficult to replicate using any one of hundreds of 'site cloning' tools....

.... however, due to the nature of the 'Gentlemens Club' way in which LEC is operated, whereby everything that has ever been done has been achieved on a non-payment/no-cost basis which relies on the donations of members (in either time, expertise, facilities, finance or other), the moral stance I take is that it is not for me to 'steal' (used very losely) the information and/or webformat which someone else has designed/provided for the Forum/Wiki, and replicate it on my own server(s).

Whilst it may well be of benefit to others (it may or may not be of use to me, who knows?) I isn't something i am prepared to do off my own back.

Someone has (previously) used their expertise to create the site, host the site and maintain the site - it is my wish that it can be maintained for everyones' benefit, but in an ideal world I would prefer to try to resolve any issues with getting the required information legitimately, without putting in a lot of effort unnecessarily, even if it takes a while.

As stated previously, there are ways to access the information, so what would be gained by re-building it?

Purely the ability to add to it easily, and if you end up upsetting those who have previously bothered to do the articles, then they may well feel that they won't bother in future, so there is no point in doing it that way.

The Wiki has (traditionally) been built by probably no more than a dozen contributors, and whilst many people ask for an article to be added, they don't always want to do it themselves - it is NOT another job for the Moderator/Admin team, "This is for everyone" (as TBL would say!).

I will end by saying that I could have had it back up and running months ago by grabbing a back-up (which i can access) and publishing it on my own server - but it isn't the 'right' thing to do for reasons as mentioned - if you dissagree, then feel free to locate a backup, convert it and publish it, I can't stop you......

...... but be aware, anything which is/has been a Wiki may well contain things which you wouldn't want on your own servers, and could contain files which will cause you future issues - do you want to risk it?

edit : cross, I haven't read your reply yet.

PS: as often, it appears that there are already quite a few tools available (html to wiki converters), so this can be a good start.
examples:
http://bmanolov.free.fr/html2wiki-tables.php
http://labs.seapine.com/htmltowiki.cgi <= this one seems to be requestable through ajax requests so we can make a very simple script to send our pages
https://bitbucket.org/axelclk/info.blik ... 2Mediawiki (java offline version I think)
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2137 ... -converter
– etc
I haven't tested any of those though.

Actually I just don't understand why would anyone be upset if one would upload a new version of the wiki to replace the lost one? I must be missing something, maybe something is lost in translation, or some cultural difference or maybe it's just me, I don't know ^^'
To me a wiki is a bunch of information written gradually by a lot (or more realisticly a couple) of individuals so there is no specific "author" anyway.
Of course the history of modifications would be lost if uploading a backup made from the web archive, but I didn't think that would really matter to anyone.

Now I want to stress that I really don't want to upset anyone here, I just wanted to help — I won't make a new version available if it's considered a bad thing by others.
