I think that part of the fuss is that you'll get a 16" wheel with the correct offset which enables you to use a brake upgrade with bigger discs / calipers

Not sure about that argument. How much better are, say, the 16" Hi Spec calipers and discs over 15" ones ??

I'm sure there must be a way to calculate these sort of things and I'm sure, as night follows day, that someone on LEC will come up with the answer

Well... I've driven both, and was shocked by the difference actually!
