Roger Becker

Postby M100_DMM » Fri 24.02.2017, 14:26

It's been reported today that Roger Becker, former Director of Vehicle Engineering at Group Lotus and who was an integral part of the M100 project, has passed away: https://www.facebook.com/LotusCars/posts/1427907090587065

Apart from his terrific contribution to Group Lotus over his 44 years with the company, Roger will forever be remembered as the man who drove the Esprit S1 in 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. His was indeed a life well spent.

Very sad. His contribution to Lotus and how the cars handle was so important, I believe that Lotus released Roger Becker special edition Elises and Exiges in his honour when he retired.

Very sad to read this. Many many years ago an M100 owners convoy and tour of Lotus production and HQ was organised on this very forum. After the factory tour we were ushered
into the boardroom. On hearing that a bunch of M100 enthusiasts had turned up Roger generously came in and offered to talk about the Elan and answer any questions
we might have about its development. It certainly made our day. I can still remember his answer to the question; 'If you were developing the Elan today what would you change?'
His almost immediate response, and Lotus to the core "Reduce the car's weight".

Yup, can only agree with Mr Becker's comment, my M100 SE is almost 3 cwt heavier than my +2S so could do with losing some weight. S2 is even heavier and why anybody would lug around aircon' in a convertible remains a complete mystery to me.

(Well it helps when it comes to demist the windscreen, but otherwise I concur that it's pretty useless)

Easy for all you north latitude folks to say, but just try driving in Texas in July in your convertible some time.

Well, I used to be in the school of thought that a/c was a waste of time until we toured France in a black Elan in 40+ degrees. Then it was a case of hood up / air-con on!
