So if mine never gets above 1/8 scale on the gauge, is that likely to be a stuck thermostat?

My experience is a dodgy gauge or connections. My gauge has stopped altogether... still got power to the sender but no reading... I've decided to put a separate measure and gauge on my.. nice little unit able to switch a number of things, at Temps I can specify
It's why I'm looking for an average normal working temp.. 80 ish sounds fine

Yes - confirm by feeling the top hose.
If you really want to know what is going on buy one of geoff's elanscan cables.

I have one . . . I just wish I also had a laptop with a battery which lasted longer than 5 minutes
Thanks, all, off to investigate

My observations, using a digital gauge with thermocouple in contact with thermostat housing wrapped in pipe insulation, are here ...
forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=23199&p=308407#p308470Seems 1/8 th scale is 53°C, or thereabouts, so I reckon thermostat is overdue for replacement. Bet your fuel consumption is awful if the engine doesn't get up to temp.
I run a 89°C Astra Van stat that gives me a heater that does something for winter use with hood down. Info about thermostats here..
forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewtopic.php?f=134&t=24910#p314079Any thermostat mounted in the vertical position (as in Elan) should have a 'jiggle valve' to stop air getting trapped in the stat housing and stat should be installed with it at top / 12 o'clock position. Somewhere in the wiki is an article that suggests a Mini thermostat can be used but they were installed in horizontal position so don't have the jiggle valve.

A 12v charge lead works quite nicely, the you only have to rely on the battery for the brief moments the engine is stopped.

I may try that as I'm using my Dads old pc and he passed on (too) many years back and the battery is also knackered - interestingly they are available on ebay from the Continent just not in the UK!
