It's either severe anaemia or a coolant leak! But it needn't be as grim as you fear. That is, depending how far under it goes, below the valve in the headlamp recess, the electric Coolant pump and various pipes. Need to verify where from before you panic.

Are you using pink antifreeze? That is below the air cooler for the turbo but it maybe a water leak from a hose or the electric water pump which is above.

Looks like it is OAT which will corrode any brass (sensors) in the system.

Having had the chance of a slightly longer look this afternoon, it seems to be dripping off the rear corner of the black undertray immediately behind the rubber lip spoiler.

I confess to my shame that I had never actually checked the colour of the antifreeze since I bought the car. Sounds like a good opportunity to a) trace the leak properly, and b) fit a set of Samco hoses before a flush and refill. Yet more work to do over the winter :?

Remove the undertray Jonathan. Based on personal experience, a leak from a) radiator end caps (either end), b) recirculating pump, c) bleed valve, d) top/bottom hoses to the rad, e) coolant hose to the block, f) the dreaded Y hose and g) the PAS pump banjo [I presume you have confirmed it's not oily] will all result in a drip at either end of the undertray depending on the angle of the car.

Thanks, Geoff (and indeed everyone else) for the helpful suggestions. It's just coolant; there's no sign of any oil content :D

Unfortunately I'm away all week again on business, and then we're off to see some friends of Pauline's next weekend (yawn), so axle stand action will have to wait a while. The good news is that I've wiped it up around lunchtime today and it hasn't recurred. However, that doesn't mean I'll be ignoring it . . .

Jonathan - When you've sorted the leak, get the coolant drained and flushed. And do yourself a favour and replace that horrible pink OAT antifreeze, and replace it with the blue ethylene glycol stuff. The pink stuff is no good for the old engines :(

But Rambo, isn't that the same OAT that my motor factor assures me is suitable for all vehicles, and the best thing since sliced bread? And is that anything to do with the fact that he holds a (very profitable) dealership for the said brand??

Seriously, I don't like the pink either, and if I'd known it was in there, I'd have flushed and refilled months ago. It simply never occurred to me at someone might have been daft enough to fill a 1990s engine with OAT.

thanks again for the wise counsel.

There are three y hoses. One is at the front of the engine, attached to the electric recirculating pump, one is at the other end of the same pipe where it attaches to the bottom radiator hose and the third one is at the rear, going to the heater valve. The one Geoff is referring to is the one that broke on his car (whichever was the one at the rear of the engine). viewtopic.php?f=28&t=24824&p=323338&hilit=Hose#p323338
