If anyone has a couple of spare tickets and a car pass that is for the standard parking I would like them for one of our local club members who has left it until the last minute to decide that he is coming
he will be coming in a 1969 Elan S4 so would be allowed to park on site provided he has the right pass
anything would be good
I shall be at Dunston Hall from about 3pm tomorrow
cheers
Gareth

Ask Trevor on FaecesBook. He's just passed on the green pass to Henri Van Gelder so Henri should have a yellow pass.

I will then post on another thread for advice on how to fix it (it's not cables or anything external, it's something more expensive). Shame - it's the first time it's let me down (not counting potholes on Skye).

John

John,

Sorry to hear your woes - and I hope it's nowt too expensive.....

.... i know you said that you only have 5th - but is it jammed in gear, or that is the only one that you can select?

Either way, it's unlikely to be cables (as they will *normally* allow some variation of gear, either 1,3,5 or 2,4,R if it's one cable, and then 1,2 or 3,4 or 5,R if it's the other one).

If it's jammed in gear, then I would suspect that the indent cam in the selector housing has become lose (a common-ish fault which means that the bit which stops you going into reverse whilst going forward moves on the shaft and stops it coming out of 5th gear.... easy repair - and free!) - otherwise it could be the big nut on the end of the gear shaft - again a free repair......

..... any more than that may not be so quick and easy (and cheap) to fix as it could be anything inside the box of cogs causing the problem.

Good luck with the search and remedy - you'll be missed - but probably a sensible move to limp home as opposed to me having to get my spanners out in a dusty carpark......... again!
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Pinky,
It’s definitely not the linkage or anything “external” (I checked that at Stirling before making the decision to turn back). Your other two suggestions are exactly what I was thinking (I mean hoping for). It’s not jammed in gear, but getting it out doesn’t feel nice at all.

Thanks for the good wishes. (By the way, I’ve sent Clemo an email about the jig for the roll bars, and BigErch has the shortbread, rowies - don’t let Geoff near them as he’s already had one heart attack - and extra teabags).

Have a great time.

The best I could do at the time, given that Stevo has defected to TVRs.

note one thing, if the sideways motion cable broke while in 5 gear, due to the "6th gear protection" design of the geabox, you would be effectively stuck in 5 forever, because your unable to move the lever back to the centre position.

John, please triple check that, i have a spare (albeit 27 years old) sideways motion cable in working condition when the other cable broke last year while i was driving to work and i managed to (very luckily) get my hands on the refurbished S2 cables from henk-jan for a fraction of the only known reliable alternative (bcn short shifters)

just send me a PM if you confirm that is your problem. (for some reason the forum stopped allerting new replies to subscribed threads again for me)

That is not true. The Crossgate is spring loaded and it defaults to the 3rd/4th slot.

There are several problems that can lock the gearbox in 5th gear, but the most common is the nut on the 5th gear shaft coming loose.

http://forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewt ... 80#p191268

It is a LONG topic and more common than most.

João, John,
Thanks for the suggestions. Brit-Car-Nut got it in one. Thanks for the thread link. The first post by Valimar exactly describes what happened to me yesterday. I will read and digest and continue this conversation on that thread.

I'm not going to make it there in time to claim my pass and tickets from Trevor, so if anyone else wants to be on the LEC display then go for it.

Reverting to plan B now
