My first car even though it was a 1.3 was £155 per month fully comp lol. My excess is around £250.

Actually, i don't think thats to bad for 21 yr old & an elan, my other son had an Escort GTi, & that cost him £1500 when he was 21 ( 3 yrs ago ).

That particular Elan was the one that EVO magazine used for some road tests last year - they borrowed it from Paul Matty's... so if you want some quality pics of it then get hold of a back issue.. or beg me for mine

EVO Sept 2006 - £4 at the time - maybe they have back issues?

It didn't make the 2nd round of a "15 best front wheel drives of all time" due to some negative comments about the Elan in general.

"so aloof, so lacking in interactivity"

"the rear wheels seem to be there to prevent the boot scraping along the road"

"very impressive, but strangely unexiting"

"you feel detached"

"you don't feel involved"

As any of us owners know from long experience the above comments are simply bullshit. Personally, I think the EVO testers have missed a trick.

they are talking about is getting a little closer to the truth.
The Elan is clearly the best FWD ever. Nothing else even comes remotely close. As always, it took Lotus to get involved to show how suspension for a FWD should be designed. Unfortunately the rest of the motoring world has taken no notice, and FWDs have gone backwards since S2 no 800 left Hethel. That is a crime against science.

To be fair to them they also say positive things like:-

"the Elan is stunningly effective"

"as an exercise in proving how effective front wheel drive can be, it's a masterclass"

I still think their overall synopsis was blinkered and the negatives outweighed the positives. IMO the Elan should have got into the final 6 shoot out where it would have given the others a run for their money. But then again I am slightly biased.

Incidentally, Renault came 3rd and 2nd with the Clio Williams and Clio Trophy and in top spot was the Subaru Integra Type-R

I have driven a Renault. Unreliable and felt...just felt plain weird. Not at all enjoyable.
