My New Elan and its Bubble!

Postby Vipers » Tue 06.01.2015, 10:55

Hi Guys,

Just thought that I would upload a few pictures of my recently purchased S2 Elan which I absolutely love, this is my 2nd Elan, my original purchased new in 1991 which I kept for 4 years, its great to be back in an Elan again, unfortunately it failed its MOT last week so is going back to Allon Whites later this week to get it sorted.

On Sunday I setup the Carcoon Veloce in the metal garage I had built a few weeks ago for the Elan to live in as I have now found out that a metal garage really isn't a great idea especially where condensation in involved, I went in the garage the other day and the while bodywork had a layer of condensation on it with beads of water sitting on the wheels, hopefully the Carcoon will remedy this.

As far as putting together the Carcoon it was a real doddle, even for a DIY numpty like me, all in all it took around 2 hours, I went with a small which fits the Elan perfectly, may get one for the Exige LF1 next.

Hohly cow, your car looks absolutely great!
Do you ever drive it, or do you spend all your time cleaning it?

I hope and presume that the carcoon will help keeping the moist out of your car.

Thanks HJ2, not driven it much since getting it to be honest as failed the MOT straight away, hopefully that will be all sorted tomorrow though :-)

I'll report back on the Carcoon, I hope it is as good as their website says as a metal garage really isn't a good idea where moisture is concerned as I have recently found out.

Car looks great Vipers. Bet you're glad you waited for a Collapso Red S2 rather than going for Gary's Midshite Blue one

That Carcoon can only be good news for the S2 rather than sitting in a tin garage

You mentioned a while back that you knew of another red S2 which might be coming up for sale. If you hear of anything in good condition, low mileage etc.... ie in as good nick as yours, please let me know by PM 8)

Thanks Guys, yes there was another one I was approached about on here, it was in storage and he was going to retrieve sometime over the winter, needed some work but sounded like a great example, I'll PM you over the guys details Rambo.

Took the Elan over to Allon Whites this morning for the work for the MOT + a service, then it will be nice to start using it more regular :-)

Rambo, tried sending you a PM, but it doesn't seem to happy at the moment, the guy with the red S2 is on this forum as Chipp, I'm sure he won't mind me mentioning him on here.

Thanks again guys, yes glad that I held out for a red one in the end, I just wouldn't have been happy with any other colour to be honest then I couldn't resist the red Carcoon :-) they actually do quite a good range of different colours. Just got back from Allon Whites, £600 later she is all fit for the road again :-)

We built the garage on a real make shift base so it really is all a bit Heath Robinson to be honest, but we are only renting at moment so didn't want to go to crazy, so we put down plastic sheeting to help keep the damp out, then some ply sheets with the below high density rubber foam flooring to finish it off, reasonably happy with the final result, eventually I would love a Jay Leno garage :-)

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately my metal garage and bubble came to a sticky end today, luckily I saved the Elan.

Around lunchtime we had some ridiculously heavy winds, which destroyed the garage, it just ripped it from its moorings, looking back I really did take my life in my own hands to get the Elan out without any damage, worth it though.

My shed looked a bit like that this afternoon - and the only damage I sustained was a smashed passenger window (in temporary storage) - glad you saved the car!

Thanks Guys, sorry to hear you had a similar experience Dave.

Have to admit that my arms are killing me today after an hour fighting with Mother Nature and trying to keep the garage on planet earth.

Version 2 is now at the planning stage, a wooden garage this time with a fresh concrete base for it to be anchored too, the whole metal garage was a bad idea from day one really, especially when it came to condensation and damp.

Best thing to house a car is actually a carport. Roof with large overhang to keep the rain off and through ventilation to dry it off. Put a wet car in a garage in the evening and it can be still wet next morning.
Can't beat a garage to do those oddjobs in though - particularly in winter when a fanheater makes it cosy. Very challenging to put up shelves on the walls of a carport too..

If I had room and was beginning from scratch I'd design a garage with a big carport on the side to have the best of both worlds. Summer jobs would be done under the carport where the ambient light is much better.
Never enough light in the right place when working in a garage!

But you can counteract that by having your birthday cake in the garage - the extra candle will make up the difference
