Name the 100 differences in the S2

Postby Gary » Sun 31.12.2006, 15:47

We all know that an SE is just a poor mans S2. Infact there were over 100 improvements for the S2.

Thought it might be a good idea to start listing them so here goes:

1. Catalaytic Converter
2. S2 Wheels
3. Suspension Changes
4. Steering Changes
5. Hood improved
6. Dash lights always on
7. Centre console improved
8. Different Jack
9. Same key for all doors
10. Standard Alarm

Incidently, apparently of the 800 S2 models made. 450 were RHD, and 350 LHD.

I meant all locks. The same key fits boot , doors and glove box. You don't need a bunch of keys like a jailer.

Another one :

I guess the newer handbrake mechanism could be considered an improvement.
Possibly the O2 sensor too, although maybe you were counting that as part of the catalytic converter system.

As for all the rest of the "improvements", I think I'm with Dico on this one! :poke:

Yeah - they usually arrive at the destination a few minutes earlier!

But seriously, I suppose you could also consider the different interior trim options - namely the doorcards and seats.

Do we count the options ?

Geoff is obviously an S2 owner, however must say I hadn't noticed any difference in the seals. SE/S2 seem just as bad as each other.

Anyhow, here is number 12

#8 isn`t an improvement
#9 the SE has the same key for all doors

another SE owner....

The console is an improvement as it doesn't get in the way.

So you can use the same key for the doors as for the glove box can you Monty ?

Gary, being serious here ( if you can ? ), we all know there are a lot of minor DIFFERENCES between the S2 & SE, but what you've asked are known actual improvements ?, so shall we stop sniping at SE owners & get down to actual facts, then we might all learn something ?
Out of the list of 10 you originally stated the wheels ( lighter ), suspension ( bushes ), steering ( PAS feel ), hood ( Seals ) & same key could be construed as improvements.
Why you have considered the Cat ( less power ), dash lights ( so what ? ), centre console ( real cheap flimsy ), jack ( wtf ? ) & alarm ( known to break ) improvements, is just beyond me, unless you started this just to wind peeps up ??????
Interior trim options were also offered on late SE models, so that rules that out, colour options, well ok, i'll give you that one. Also you havn't mentioned one of the most important improvements, the galvanised rear wishbones !, also think there was an improved upper rear linkeage. That makes 8 definite improvements so far , long, long way away from 100.
Please consider this, why did Bugatti make the S2 ?, it was because he needed funds badly, & found he had the makings of 800 elans. If you needed to raise funds & was only doing a very short run of cars, why would you invest many thousands in new tooling for new parts, unless you had to ?. Having spoken to lotus people, who were involved at the time of the elans production, they all said the differences were mainly brought about because they had simply run out of original parts.

Geoff, please explain why you think the Cat is an improvement ?
Could be wrong here, as i know there was 5 or 6 different stages of hoods, but i did think the seals were the major difference, indeed improvement, so don't think you can list hood & seals as 2 improvements.
I have handled a SE & S2 console, & believe me the S2 is not an improvement.
Also don't get it why its an improvement to have the dashlights on all the time, surely if you want the lights on you just turn them on. Having them on all the time will just shorten the life of the bulbs, so thats detrimental !

Can`t class i bloody glove box as a door  now if the doors and ignition key was on the same key that would be an improvement
