OK, I feel the urge to join this club so I have a couple.
1) having spent 4 abortive attempts at changing the timing belt (due to having to acquire the correct size sockets, spammers and Allen keys, I finally got to the last two bolts, the one which clamp the cam belt tensioner, funny star- shaped bolts, which I assumed (wrongly) were Torx bolts, - they weren't they were normal bolts which apparently Lotus Lotus put extra teeth on because they needed to be tightened up so much, imagine my glee when I rounded off the bolt at goes through the idler pulley. After a quick question on LEC, I was given the option of weld a nut on the bolt ( no welder) or Grind it off with a Dremmel.
Stupidity rating 8/10
Cost £85.00 ( Dremmel + bolts-well it was atop of range one)
2) whilst replacing the weather strips I decided to replace the screws with SS, , as I tightened the screws up I heard a crack, and assumed this to be OK, imagine my joy when I realised I had used too- long screws and I now had 5 screw ends protruding through the door skin.
Stupidity rating 100/10
Cost £10 - paint kit plus 3 days work filling, painting and lacquering in the winter, plus the screw holes still show if you know where to look ( which I do)
hey hum, we live and learn
