Looking for H397 MFX, was GPR 1

Postby uk08462 » Mon 01.06.2009, 21:03

In 2001 I sold my 1991 BRG Elan SE which I had owned from new. It served me well as daily transport for many years and took me and my (then) girlfriend trips to Tuscany, Modena (aroused much interest outside some Italian car museum), Munich and many other places on the continent. She (now my wife) has now given me permission to buy another and I was wondering what happened to 'my' Elan.

Reg when new and when sold: H397 MFX
Reg for all but 3 weeks of ownership: GPR 1
Sold to a gent from Cadnam in Hampshire in July 2001.

If anybody knows the whereabouts of this car, I'd love to find out.

It doesn't feature on our SE database, sorry.
Might it have been GRP 1? As in Glass Reinforced Plastic?
Are your initials SH?
Does Bournemouth mean anything to you or the car's history?

It was definately 'GPR 1' as I have owned that number for 27 years now. The only time it should have been 'GRP 1' was when it was on a Clan Crusader...

My initials are SH. The car was bought in April 1991 from Bramshaw Garage in Bournemouth who were then the main dealers - I still live in Bournemouth. Why do you ask?

I ask because it didn't feature in the database and its correct GPR 1 registration now cross-refers to H397 MFX.
I can tell you that it had:
Full leather seats with Yellow flash.
We didn't know its Engine Number.
The last 4 numbers of its Chassis Number were 7486 with an M prefix.
It was built and first registered in April '91.
It had covered approx 50,000 miles when it was entered into the DB on 24/04/98.
It had a Stainless Steel aftermarket exhaust and was owned by you when you had a btinternet.com e-mail address.

That was me entering the details back in 1998.

Looks like this vehicle has slipped off the radar

I've just checked its status with DVLA here & it is currently taxed, so it appears to still be in the UK & on the road.
It may show up at a Club Lotus event, like Snetterton next weekend.

I have just bought a BRG S2, however, I would still be very interested to hear of the whereabouts of my old SE.

There's a H reg MFX in BRG in Wylde Green in Birmingham...
I'll find the exact plate number and see if it's the one.

I can confirm the whereabouts of your car.
It is in Wylde Green in Birmingham. H397 MFX...

Parked up on a driveway. My friend spotted it last Sunday whilst on our way back from Stratford. It's just a short walk from his house and where I often pass when in the UK. Not seen it before either parked-up or on the road.

Well, there are a few nice ones around at the moment if you feel the urge again - just look at the eBay thread.

Is this still there or long gone? Thought I'd put my annual feeler out there to see if the current owner is wanting to sell.

It is currently SORNed, you could contact the owner through the DVLA

Looked into that on the DVLA website but there are a set of valid reasons for them divulging addresses and "wanting to find your old car" was not listed!

No, you don't ask them for the address you ask them to forward a letter.
