Your 'good authority' is a bit low. Lotus announced the S2 as a Limited Edition of 800. I don't know what the split between UK, US or ROW was as they were built to order but 800 was stated in the brochure and has been quoted in several books including The Lotus Book by William Taylor that was prepared with help from Lotus and the Chapman family and is probably more accurate than any other book. 3,855 seems to be the number of Elans in the first run but don't know the split between SE & NA but there are many more SE's than NA's. So in total 4,655 M100's were built - wonder how many are still left?

Yep - what he said......

..... but there have been conflicting reports from various reliable sources (well, okay, me and smiffy have seen the car(s)) at the factory....

...800 S2s were sold to the public....

.... but 2 others were built, making it 802 total (1 was smashed up as a test car, and the other one (Medina Green) was kept at the factory as a development mule, and was last seen lanquishing in a colapsing lean-to - but they wouldn't sell it to us!

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Yes Dave, I reckon official numbers will be those sold and registered for road use.

Was the one smashed up a testing accident or a deliberate crash test car? Can't see the need for crash testing an S2 when the SE had been 'through the hoop' but perhaps they were wise to Lotus trickery... Excel came out under the name 'Eclat Excel' so they could use crash testing of Eclat and avoid wrecking an Excel even though Excel had slightly different chassis, as suspension & transmission was sourced from Toyota.

The extra Medina S2 - they might sell it to you if they owed you money - My current SE's handbook shows Dealer & PDI as Lotus Cars Ltd Service Dept and Date of Purchase as 17/12/93 which I believe was after production was cancelled by GM. It was registered to Elf Oil Co (Reg No originally L1 ELF) on 22/12/1993 so I suspect it may have been an SE 'kicking around the factory' like that Medina S2. Lotus went through a period of putting Elf Oil in production cars so I wonder whether a bill came in for oil and somebody said ' we can't pay that, see if they'll take that Pacific Blue SE as payment'... just a thought...

Phil,

Unfortunately, they don't owe me money, but i think you're probably right about the bartering system used to get creditors off their back. As for the smashed car, no details were ever disclosed as to the reasons for it (deliberate or accidental), but like you, I wouldn't think it would have been necessary to go through the whole 'test procedure' - unless any of the 'new' market areas (geographically speaking) demanded it - and I wouldn't have thought it would be worthwhile to get rid of one of only 800 cars just to open a market where they could sell half a dozen models - it was only ever intended to get rid of old parts, not open the way for a whole new production run.

Maybe it was something to do with the deal with Kia????? It's just another of those mysteries which will remain until someone tells a story in the future..... but I suspect no-one will ever really know the truth.

I am not sure if anyone is still looking for info on S2's but here goes with my "new" car

Limited edition number: No. 122
Colour: Medina
Hood Colour: Black
Leather including piping or Half leather: Graphite Grey Leather
Lhd or Rhd: RHD
Mileage: 3,458 (Yes 3,458. The car was dry stored by the owner and hardly used. Laterly only 15 miles between MOT's)
Reg: Originally registered LOT1S and now for sale by previous owner for £15k.
Reg: Now on M130 XYB but I will put F110 TUS on it when I get the V5 back.
Exact date of registration: March 1995, although built Sept 1994 and delivered to Murray Motors
VIN number: SCC100ZT1RHA26122
Engine number: 0214487
Extras and Upgrades like Nardi/Aircon/Brakes/Chips/Exhaust/Suspension: Nardi Steering Wheel.

I have recently purchased this car and had it transported to Murray Lotus to have it checked over as it had only one service in its life despite being owned by a motor dealer. All that is required to get it on the road is a full service and belts change, one wheel bearing and 4 new tyres. I hope to have her on the road next weekend and I can't wait to drive her.

I was told by an Elan owner that was 1 S2 made without a number, LHD, sold in Belgium.
The buyer wanted an Elan S2 (which was no longer evailable) and his wife didn't want an Elise.
So apparently Lotus was able to make one last LHD for Belgium, only missing the "Limited Edition 80x" name plate on the dash.
The one who told me the story he had one of the very last ones for sale (Nr. 798 I believe it was) and knew the owner of the unnumbered version personally.
Can't remember if that car is still running...
Story was told to me like 4-5 years ago, can't remember all the details, sorry.
