Wine Country Anybody???

Postby TommyK » Sun 07.05.2006, 09:22

With the weather looking up I was wondering if any Bay Area LECers felt like taking a leisurely drive through wine country... I was thinking of starting at Sterling in Calistoga and working my way south. I'm tired of being jealous of all those UK event posts. We can't let the Brits have all the fun!

Did someone say "Wine Trip" :smt041

gather interest and get some tentative dates and I'll let you know when I can go.

I live just North of the Sonoma Valley winery row but will travel for a fun drive . . .

Just got an email from Marie. She and Kell will probably be up for it. Are there any days that are completely off-limits or especially prime for you?

I know that there are more than just 4 of us in the Bay Area...

COME ON PEOPLE!!! SHOW SOME LOVE!!!

Wine country? Absolutely! But here is an idea for Sat the 24th of June. Rather than tour North to South, start at the Southern end and go north. And rather than drive home at the end, head up to Chico Sat night. About 2 hours from Calistoga, and the first hour is on some of the nicest roads in Norcal.

That Sunday morning is the Chico British Car Show. Our Elans got some attention there last year, and a bigger group this year would be a lot of fun.

Ugly drive home, which is the only problem.

I will heading up there that weekend. But if there is another run, count me in.

That's a great idea... I wouldn't be able to make the Sat trip up (I work a pretty abnormal schedule) but I would definitely be up for Sunday. Maybe 2 trips this summer? A day trip and an overnighter? :smt017

Great. Let me know if you are going to make the June 25th Chico Car Show. I can get you directions.

As for the wine tour, anytime!

I'm definitely going to the car show on the 25th... I won't be able to make the day trip up on the 24th but I'm still more than happy to organize something for the rest of you. I'm thinking about another trip Sun July 8th or Mon July 9th. What do guys think?

You can mapquest this address for the car show address.
1705 Manzanita Ave
Chico, CA 95926-1622, US

The show starts around 9:00am. I'll be there at start time. As a note, I leave the show around noon and head up for Ashland, Oregon for the Shakespearean Festival. Have done this the past few years. See a play and head back on Monday. Always great.

As for your Wine trip in July, I am in for that too.

Gosh, I haven't been to the Ashland Shakespeare Fest for over a decade... I didn't even realize that it was that same week. I may have to copy your plans for sun/mon.

Does anyone in NorCal have an Elanscan interface cable that I could borrow for this weekend? I have a long trip in mind, including the Chico Brit Car Show, and would love to have Elanscan on board during the trip. There is a bottle of wine in it for you, and at least one step above 2-buck Chuck.

It would be fun to a brit interpret "2-buck Chuck". Kinda be like payback, since I rarely have any idea what they are talking 'bout.

British Car Show

Postby Kjeld » Fri 30.06.2006, 23:19

Well, I am certainly glad none of you attended the Chico British Car Show last weekend. As it turned out, I wound up winning 3rd place in the British Cars from the 90's category. I don't really remember seeing ANY cars from the 90's there, so I have to assume mine was the 3rd.

I tried to make it up but was delayed by that pesky thing called "work"... what a bother. I wouldn't have been any competition anyhow, the Elan isn't exactly road worthy  so I would have had to drive the 325ci.

If anybody is still interested in doing an informal wine country drive I'm planning on a trip to Sterling on July 23rd. I don't think the Elan will be presentable so it will be in the BMW but I would love the company of a real car. Let me know...

Update on the June 25th Chico Brit Car Show and Ashland trip. First and foremost, is was hot as h*ll that weekend. I know a lot of you pull the AC compressor from your M100 ASAP, but you would'ah died out there that weekend. It was 110F @11:00am the morning of the car show. The upside was, that the show drew about 25% fewer entrants. To my utter shock, my M100 wound up winning a trophy for best Brit car from the 90's! Frankly, I don't remember there being many brit cars there from the 90's (didn't they all become Fords in the 90's?). Still though, pretty fun.

Then drove to Ashland, top up and AC blasting. Not the trip I had in mind. The next day, I drove out hwy299 from Redding to Eureka, which is certainly one of the most entertaining roads in California. Over 3 hours of twisties on nice pavement, through the Siskiyou and coastal range. Again, most of the trip it was between 110F and 117F (Redding!), so the top was up an AC blowing full.

Came down the next day on 101. It was much cooler, probably 90F, so the top was down and all was well.

I have been going to the Chico Brit Car show for about 10 years. It is not as overwhelming as the Palo Alto show. The entrants seem a lot more interested in drinking beer, kicking tires and exchanging restoration war stories, than how they transported their trailor queens in from Los Angeles.

You guys ought to think about it next year. I'll phone the weather service ahead of time, see it they can turn it down a notch or two next summer.

I won't be in my Elan but I would love to see some others out there on the road. Let me know and I'm sure we can work something out.
