I agree with the above - better to 'suffer' now than later - no-one ever died from embarrassment, far too many have got ill by leaving it.

I've tried to get checked with two different doctors at my local surgery but they say unless your showing symptoms the test isn't worth doing
with everyone in the media etc pushing you to get checked isn't this outrageous malpractice ?
It would help is there was a clinic that specialised in this problem as they would spot problems earlier.

Good advice in that article. You could always go private, don't know if you would have to be referred by your GP though. My brother and I have had/got PC and my uncle died from it so it's in the family genes I guess. My other brother has a needle phobia and although he says he's been tested, I'm not so sure.

If you can look through your family's history for evidence of PC, this could indicate that a test would be a smart move. I take it that your GP is not willing to give you a test based on your age?

IMHO-To deny a PSA test for a patient over the age of 50 based on the lack of symptoms is gross negligence with a splash of complete ignorance. All PCa symptoms are likely to be presented once the PCa has spread beyond the prostate. To catch it before spread can only be achieved by regular PSA testing year on year followed by proactive management in the event of a change.
I was diagnosed aged 55 and had been ill for two years prior- my GP wouldnt pay for a PSA test- by the time I was diagnosed it had spread to my bladder and bowel and metastasised everywhere. Following an 8 year uphill battle I am bed bound much of the time and too frail to care for myself anymore.
What right do you have to deny your patients early diagnosis and treatment, and based on what sound knowledge, experience or reasearch. None methinks.

Having just about got over the arthritis-type pain that has been bugging most of my joints as a result of the statins for the last 6 months, I had a PSA test and the results were elevated at 9 µg/l - normal is 4. Off to the GP for a DRE (slightly enlarged but smooth) and chat today: Current protocol is MRI scan within two weeks then biopsy if necessary but having done some background reading beforehand, I have decided to go for a second PSA in 3 months as apart from a slightly reduced flow rate and increased frequency, there have been no other major changes or symptoms. The GP has agreed this, but wanted me to acknowledge the increased risk which I have done. Reassuringly, I spoke to our next door neighbour (retired GP) and he has recently had a slightly enlarged prostate confirmed after a similar figure of 8.9µg/l but deciding to repeat after 3 months so it's off to Spain as planned next Tuesday.

Listen to your body and get yourself checked - if I'd taken my symptoms more seriously 2½ years ago, I might have caught my heart attack earlier.

After my scare back in September 2017, which subsequently found an enlarged prostate I am now on the relevant pill to help the situation, I also cannot emphasise the
importance of going to your GP if you have any symptons regarding the waterworks.

Having been thro the process you must be aware that the DRE is also not very reliable as the finger can only feel one part of the prostate. My Dre was normal. If it wasnt for the insistance of a consultant I would have been treated for BPH. MRI and biopsy are best way forward.

This poss my last post on LEC- for those who dont know all treatment is now stopped and I'm in end of life care with Mc Millan and Hospice help. Dont now how long I have but months most likely. In constant pain- on opiates. Cannot stand or walk any more, bed bound and well cared for by my angel Maxine.

I read this sad news yesterday , tried to think of something to post and all i keep coming back to is it is utter s**t . In a more shitter than s**t way .
I cannot begin to even comprehend . There are words of comfort i want to write but this makes me so deflated and angry with a evil nasty shity thing that can strike any of us men down . Dave T is an early founder member of LEC . A dusty car park tyre kicker and a mild mannered LEC moderator. And above all an all round good guy . Why does this thing happen to the good people first . I am happy to read that he is with his wife at this difficult time for both of them . Sending love to him and all of his family .
