Hi all,
For what its worth I have taken a selenium tablet 200mg once a day for the last dozen or more years. This
was after reading in the New Scientist that it had proven been to reduce the chances of prostate cancer. The professor
in charge said he would now take them for life. I had an op. for an enlarged prostate but that was no problem.
I also had cancer, but that was tongue and throat and ten years ago. I am elderly.

Bump!!

Recent news has made me put pen to paper again. They think testing does more harm than good. If your Doctors know what they are doing there should be no harm done.

Despite what recent research says- a PSA test ever year if your over 50 is essential if you are to avoid getting advanced prostate cancer. If a close relo had it then age 40 plus
Once you get a positive test then have it checked straight away- do not wait to see what the next reading is the following year -it may be too late
It is the rate of increase in that which is important/critical in monitoring your status/aggressiveness of the cancer.

Early symptoms are NONE.

By the time you get symptoms its too late!!!

A DRE doesnt always pick it up- mine was normal.

If its positive or going up, then MR or CT scan before biopsy. Biopsy only gives the grade of the tumour it doesnt tell you how much is there or whether it has spread.
If the prostate is removed it cannot spread. Once it has spread you face a journey like mine- dont let that happen to you.

If you are diagnosed get referred to a specialist cancer unit not an ordinary hospital and see a Consultant who deals with your particular cancer not a "jack of all trades"

The USA stopped screening and their rates of advanced stage diagnosis have gone through the roof- NISM

By the grace of my God I have had 8 years since diagnosis when stats show I should have had 3. Those of you who know me know that hasnt been the easiest of journeys but nevertheless I have plodded on regardless-

Please please please don't let this happen to you and your family

Get tested every year

Sorry to hear this news BCN

I have said I want nobody else to get this damn disease.

Please please get tested.

For those in the UK. If your GP wont test you. Take a trip to Poland where you can get a PSA done on the High Streets for a few quid.

PSA, DRE and scans not always reliable. Nor are Docs who dont know what the *uck they are dealing with.

I'm on constant morphine now and recent radiotherapy on spine to try and reduce the pain. Only my skull and brain that doesnt have cancer in it so far so outlook uncertain despite a new treatment having a positive effect.

To BCN
The best place in US for clinical trials is the Sloane Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. If you can get into there youll have a fighting chance

Talking to my colorectal surgeon today, he explained that DRE is not particularly reliable on its own because he can only feel one side of the prostate, and it isn't firmly located so you don't get much feel before it is displaced out of touch. He prefers the PSA test initially.

BCA, I hope that you are doing OK.

The tests at NIH showed no bone cancer but confirmed serious, aggressive prostate cancer. NIH are willing to perform the necessary surgeries when I am ready. The cancer is nearest the "blood vessel end" of the prostate, so they want me to decide sooner than later to minimize any spreading to other organs. I am waiting on a sample schedule of times and procedures so I can organize the next sep.

The horrible pain I have been having appears to be due to some serious skeletal erosion and it appears that FLOMAX reduces prostate enlargement "chemically" but the chemicals also damage the material between skeletal joints, so the damage may now be permanent.

I will have the scan image files and reports in the mail in around 2 weeks and I will seek advice from a skeletal specialist and hope there is a solution of some kind.

I am grateful for all of the comments. Just don't ignore the tests. They are dirt cheap (in the US at least) and may not be the best but better than nothing. If anyone in the US needs / wants to get them done but like me doesn't have insurance, get in touch and I will refer you to a broker that will arrange the tests at a very affordable price.

John,

I've just read your news, I've been off line for a while enjoying sun, sand and dogs (canine verity unfortunately :? ), I'm dreadfully sorry to hear of your health issues and wish you well with your treatment and recovery.

The running group (it's really more a drinking group) that I 'run' with are all in the 50-80 demographic and so Prostrate issues are a common point of discussion (as with knee/hip replacements etc, etc). It's a fun Tuesday afternoon and that for sure

If only that were true, I had to have follow up RT. Sorry to sound like a killjoy, but it's sometimes not that simple.

It is quite a complex issue as once the cancer exists, removing the prostate gets it away from there, but even very low levels of testosterone will encourage any remnants to grow some more anywhere they can. They love to metastasize. Thus, bone scans become critical for determining further issues and completely stopping testosterone creation is a huge requirement for future survival.

My first urologist said " at your age, we would probably recommend that you ignore any results as it is slow growing and you will most likely die sooner for another reason"

What a crock!

I still have more MRIs and blood tests scheduled (June 13), but NIH is anxious to get the prostate out as soon as they can, thus the June 26 appointment with the operating room.

They will be doing it with the modern DaVinci robotic tools that they are well experienced and do the procedure frequently as part of their studies on the topic.

I apologise if you, Dave, if you think I was being glib, not intended at all, though the expression is/was simplistic it was intended sympathetically and, though I'm no medic, appears to mean whilst the cancer is confined prior to any spread, as I hope is the case for John and wish it had been for you also.

Good luck to both of you in your ongoing treatments.

Not wanting to be negative in any respect but!!!!

one has to read all things on this thread with an open mind and not take too seriously anything that is written- I wanted my troubles to focus on an awareness rather than my own journey though the two are intertwined

whilst BCN feels that control of testosterone is paramount I have evidence which is 100% to the contrary of what hes relying on.

Chris T knows only to well that its never over even when its over or is it. The psa tests continue indefinitely.

My only thought on this thread is that with all due respect BCN should have started a new one of his own?

Maybe a mod could split the thread somehow at the relevant point. Je ne comprends pas.

That would be fine with me. I just wanted to wake up the thread and continue pushing for testing and early diagnosis.

I certainly didn't want to overshadow Dave's situation, but once a topic has no new postings, it can easily become "lost" unless someone is actively searching for it.

My treatment will be different than Dave's since I have been under treatment for CLL Leukemia for the last seven years and coordinating any medicine / chemistry interactions has been an area of concern. I visit the NIH (500 miles away) every three months already, so they are trying to have as many visits overlap since I am uninsurable (a REALLY long story why) and they are working diligently to minimize my costs.

I'm going to lock this thread for 24 hours or so and get to work on splitting the BCN bits into a new thread.

Bare with me folks!
