My sisters new toy

Postby Rambo » Sun 19.06.2016, 21:59

Thought you'd like to see some photo's of my sisters new toy ?

It's a 1965 indianapolis 500 car (Ford 255 ci quad cam V8) designed by Rolla Vollstedt and known as "Old Bess". The winner of the '65 Indy race was a certain Jim Clark who was racing in a Lotus 38, coming 1st after leading for 190 of the requisite 200 laps. Mario Andretti came in 3rd. Old Bess, driven by driver Len Sutton, came 12th in the race after completing 177 laps before it was flagged. It achieved 185 mph down the straight

Assuming I can lever myself into the cockpit I will get a shot of driving "Old Bess" at the 2017 meeting at indianapolis :burnout:

Assuming Lord March gives the go ahead, the car will hopefully be at the Goodwood Revival next year or the year after that. The plan is for Dario Franchitti (3 times Indy 500 winner) to drive it round the track :burnout:

Wow, hats off to you , but even more so to your sister. Talk about half a story. How did she come to be buying this piece of history and why?

And a photo from 1965 of Jim Clark and John Surtees with the Indy 500 car "Old Bess"

Jim Clark (right) explains to John Surtees about the Vollstedt’s tunable rear wing - the first used in an Indy car. Though originally sceptical, jim changed his mind about the design after race day, and brought it back with him to F1
