My friend in the aviation industry tells me the challenge is that nothing is known about running Merlins for many hundreds of hours - they never lasted that long in the military (Lancaster life expectancy 5 missions) and York's and Argonauts did not crank up many hours on the same engines.

Better safe than sorry.

The new Officer Commanding BBMF for spring next year (already got a AFC for sucessful force landing of a hurricane) can't see what the fuss is all about. Merlin engines re-engineered that will go on for ever!

Hence my post!!!!!!!!

Battle of Britain Memorial No Flight!!!!!!!

Cannot understand some comments on hours of Merlin engines - surely some of those on the Mustangs have done just as many if not more hours.

There was something on a "War digs" prog about the oil used in the Merlin engine "they don't know what type of oil was originally used in the engines and are currently using one which dries up much quicker". Don't know if that is true but if it is it cannot help? The guy on the prog save some oil from the crash site to have it analysed!!!- inc soil etc!!!! ffs

I understand the RAF will ground all planes of a given type/engine use if just one fails a test.

It seems that one Merlin engine has developed a problem, or tests have indicated a safety critical issue, which therefore means all Merlin engined planes are grounded.

BBMF carry a lot of spares, and many flying WW2 planes have been fully rebuilt umpteen times to the extent they fall into the category of my great-great grandfather's broom: it's original but has had 5 new heads and 3 new handles! Like many classic cars, they are probably in better condition than when they emerged from the factory. Certainly better than after a heavy skirmish with a Messerschmitt!

I am no oil expert, but apparently it is now possible to analyse used oil, look at the debris in it and determine where it is coming from (ex F1 technology) and so isolate an issue to a specific component. So having soil in oil being analysed wouldn't actually matter. Any oil boffins on here to clarify?

If I remember correctly the Spitfire I saw at Duxford had a Merlin engine and I see they are still selling tickets for their Battle of Britain Show 23/24 September - "Witness the majestic Spitfire formation taking to the skies above historic Duxford"..
Hope they can get more than the Griffin engined Spit's into the air by then.

Chaps - this is typical PR 'hyp'. The BBMF Merlins will be back in the air soon... and the eng lads there (really boffins now) know exactly the type of oil used in the Merlins during the e War years; however, the Merlins have been refitted and refitted and refitted with piece-parts that have been manufactured with modern aviation engine techniques. There is more aluminum and other alloys in these engines then original parts. You can buy a brand new Merlin engine (made by Packard USA) made entirely of 21st century alloys. The BBMF boys know what oil to use.

Packard should know how to do it, they made them during the war using mass production techniques while UK were still building by hand, slowly. Not what you need when there's a war on !

Well, at Eastbourne today BBMF only fielded their Griffon-powered Spitfire.

Still saw/heard Merlins in the Bouchon, Mustang, Hurricane and Spitfire IX though :)

Jim

P s. 51 years ago I worked with a true gentleman Alan (Dolly) Gray who worked on Lancs and Mosquitos as an engine fitter. He said the Packard was easier to work on because it had coarser threads on the screw in cylinder liners. He liked the quality tool kit that came with each engine. Downside was it was more prone to oil leaks. Another chap I worked alongside worked on the S6B ~ but that's another story.

Sort of an Oil boffin here :-)

At a local level the EFDC uses a few techniques, normally SOAPs, filter paper, transonic tape and a DTU, if they find a problematic issue they'll send further samples to 1710. In addition they may send samples back to RR.

The last I heard,

The engines were producing debris (They all do), we monitor the type and size of the particles. This specific engine was producing debris from part of the engine which doesn't normally degrade.

When EFDC identified the issue it was grounds to reject the engine and a fleet check was required.

At the present time the first engines are being overhauled and the suspect asset assessed and remedial action taken.
