My satnav made my journey back a misery, but, hey, it was a sunny day.

Looks as though you all had a good time. I was extremely sad not to be with you.

I had hoped that my Dad would be well enough to accompany me. We'd been up to East Kirkby a few years ago to watch 'Just Jane' taxy, and my Dad was always a bit of a Lanc fan. Though he never flew them operationally, he flew Avro Yorks post-war and then got many hours on the Lanc (and Lincoln, and Shack) at Farnborough in the late 40s and early 50s, and he always thought that the Lancaster was a great pilot's aircraft. I think that he was probably fonder of the Lancaster than anything else that he flew.

He even had some tenuous involvement in getting NX611 onto the gate at Scampton when he was engineering authority for ageing aircraft (primarily Canberras and Hunters).

When it became clear that he wouldn't be well enough in time, I still hoped to go myself, and show him the pictures afterwards. Looking at yours, they'd have given him quite a kick.

Fantastic news that an anonymous donor has pledged £458,000 to the Vulcan to The Sky Trust which means they now have sufficient funding in place to go forward with the planned engineering programme, and onward to the 2010 Display Season.

This was being built in Paris by Ettore Bugatti (supplemented with "hurry up" funding supplied by the French government for "light pursuit plane Model 110P" based on the Model 100P racer) when in June 1940 it was loaded onto a lory & driven out to the French country-side, and hidden in a barn for nearly 30 years.

It was powered by two modified Bugatti model 50B 8cyl inline engines (each 450hp@4500RPM) driving countra-rotating propellers in an effort to break the world airplane speed record. Design max speed 500-550 mph.

Second last appearance this year is a private event but I may have a spare seat (or two) if anyone is interested.

Shame nobody could make it, it was superb day out.

We were making our way back to the car to get some warmer clothes and realised she was warming up. We climbed up the fire escape of a building opposite her and quickly realised we were in the area where the most car burglar alarms went off (although a few went of at Cribbs Causeway as well). Peter got a quick video of her at take off.

I see her nearly everyday and she still amazes me, she looks in better condition than the old girls I work on.

and when she lets out that Banshee scream on max slams...

Here's me the other day on the ramp, I got slightly diverted by the old girl.

The Bugatti 100P/110P - A world speed attempt and pursuit aircraft

Notice the positions of the two Bugatti T50B engines and their driveshafts:
(The aircraft used bespoke T50B engines. Amoung other changes, the blocks were cast in magnesium instead of aluminium as used in automotive T50Bs.)
