Bad news on the camp site front.

Due to it being a bankholiday  they are only accepting bookings of 3 days minimum!

I cant come up on the friday coz the missus is working on the saturday, and we cant stay up on the monday night coz we're both in work on the tuesday!

What is the camp site like at the track? It might be worth a try.

Cheers, Paul

You're dead right there Gareth - WHAT a weekend.

For those of you not in the know already, it was absolutely great fun.

We met at the Little Chef yesterday at 9am, and the car park (which wasn't small) was absolutely chock-full of Lotuses of every type and era from baby Elans to Exiges. Yellow seems to be this season's black.

Then we set off in convoy to Oulton Park. Oulton was about 10 miles away and we took in all sorts of roads from dual carriageway at national speed limit, to tiny country roads hardly any wider than 1 car. I didn't count the actual number of cars, but I reckon it was between 40 and 60, and I think we all got through OK.

On arriving at the circuit we were directed to park up on the very front row of the parking area. It was THE absolute plum spot and a huge testament to Gareth for organising it for us.

Next we all had to bail out and immediately sign up for the parade lap. It was a real bun-fight around the offical's Land Rover! And then we were immediately queueing up for the tour of the circuit.

And what a circuit! The motorcycle racing commentator Barry Nuttley once told me that it was his favourite, and now I can see why. Very technical, with every kind of corner, gradient changes and fantastic facilities. Really long and quite wide too.

I had helped Gareth to set up his video camera and just happened to be parked next to him, so I made sure I got just in front for the parade lap. Hopefully some fun footage coming up there!
We did the full circuit which includes the Shell Oils Hairpin. The banking on that is just amazing - like a cross between a bowl and a wall of death.

All too soon the lap was over, and we returned to our parking spot. There was lots to see at the event, with an open pits/paddock full of classic racing cars, to rally cars doing a demonstration. This included a TR7 V8, original SWB Audi Quattro, and even a Ford RS200.

After the racing started it became apparent just what a good viewing spot we had - we could see some of the best overtaking spots and a good proportion of the track.

By about 4pm I was getting pretty tired, so decided to knock it on the head and make a move home. This coincided with Gareth leaving too, and he lives in Buxton, which gave us the perfect excuse to do The Cat & Fiddle (the A537) in convoy.

It was the perfect end to a great day - 2 Elans, tops down, both graced with ESM's finest and the exhausts to release (or at least advertise) the power on the most dangerous road in the UK.

Superb. We have GOT to do this again next year! :D
