Arch, can I blag a flag for the return convoy ?

I like the Clan McElan design Archie. When are you doing mugs and clothing etc... I hope to meet somewhere between Moffat and Killy Lake or failing all else then I will look out for a clapped out Polo, a BRG, a Trabant and a tractor in the car park at KL. I might go down to Carlisle via the A7. I've still got a few things to tie up so will post much later

Mark - give me a buzz when you want to join the convoy and we'll be there. It's difficult to see on the post signature but the logo is tartan (spirit of Scotland). It's not that apparent on the flags either. Should have used the buchanan tartan - now thats very bright!

I hate the M6 anywhere south of Manchester (not too keen on it north of Manchester either) and the prospect of Friday PM from Manchester to Stoke, Stafford and south of Birmingham on M5 apalls me.

How about leave M6 J20A for M56, head towards Chester, then at next exit M56 J10 take A49 south through Whitchurch, Shrewsbury, Welsh border country Shropshire etc - Ludlow, Leominster.
After Leominster take A417, A438, A449 - Welland.
Mileage must be similar to M6,M5 but :
Avoids beautiful Birmingham or M6 toll road alternative
much more pleasant driving
probably little time difference from M6 M5 on a Friday afternoon.

JB - agree that there is little time difference as the A49 can be slow - lots of grey haired pensioners and tractors but it is a nicer route than the M6/M5 and is about 50 miles shorter. I travel this route regularly to visit my folks in Hereford. Its a helluva sight better than Stafford, M6/M5 interchange, etc..., etc...

Intending leaving at 9 am and see the convoy either between Moffat and KL or Carlisle and KL if I head down the A7

I'm happy to avoid M6. I'm not sure if this flight lockdown will have an effect on the usual crappy roads on a friday. If all the UK internal flights are cancelled surely that must put more folk on the roads?
Anyway, I'm happy to follow your leed.

Great weather, smashing scenery and fine company. Hopefully we can add a few more Elans to the convoy next time round.

Thanks for letting us join the convoy despite being Elan-less this year. Rambo was looking super shiny (as always) and made it easy to spot the convoy whenever you shot ahead of us, Archies flags were a neat touch, flapping around in the wind, and the Kia Elan lights are starting to grow on me after seeing a lot of them on the back of Clemo's old (and very clean) NA. Also great to meet the WindyFarmer and get to see the old Garage Queen up close.

Alan, I'm sorry i didn't get back to u on Sunday but my phone stopped working completely.
I did see Windyfarmer at the side of the M6 just north of B'pool but i was in the oustide lane motoring along - good to see it wasn't too serious.

Thanks to Rambo, we did take the delightful 'A' roads on the return journey until joining the M6 North of Manchester.
Before the Lake District, a little stone came from somewhere and Donald Ducked the windscreen of RJR. So the convoy of two crawled back at max 50 mph.

Autoglass took a week to get the correct windscreen somewhere about Leicester, and yesterday they came to my garage and fitted it there. Having had the front of that car resprayed just before Malvern, i went into the house and left them to it, although I did carry out cups of tea which in my shaky hands were half empty by the time I got over to my garage.

They did a good job. Excess only £60. The two men in 2 vans left going to their other jobs that day - which turned out they were each assigned to 6 jobs a day. Rather them than me, even if I did possess their skill.

Two corrections: (1) I am not an old man, whatever that might mean. (2) Was I driving slowly when you and John were following me on the 10 miles of twisting road from the A1 over to Duns??? We could go for a little drive when I visit you in July and the test is driving up Lochnagar in reverse. Just in case there are any English LECs reading this, Lochnagar is a mountain some 3,750 feet high South of Ballater.

I gave Archie M100 LJR to drive the road following me, and you brought up the rear. Archie's excuse was the brakes, but i had the same s... brakes also. Got decent brakes for both cars at Donington from Peter Musgrove after that.
