It's a fair old way from Dorset but the reason to travel is good. The Sqn Codes (LE = 630 Sqn based at East Kirkby from formation in 1943 to disbandment at the end of the war) on Just Jane (NX611) are very appropriate and would make a good photo oportunity. I've never been to East Kirkby but it's my home county and probably why I am where I am now. I'm a strong provisional.

Just Jane was previously the Gate Guardian at RAF Scampton for many years and befor that was at Blackpool air museum, I have the booklet of her history produced when she was at Scampton somewhere. She was built too late to see WW2 service and was originally earmarked for Tiger Force in the Far East but the war ended before she was deployed. I think she was sold to the French as used in the maritime patrol role before coming back to UK for museum display.

She was bought by the Panton Brothers who own and farm the land where East Kirkby airfield was built and they have progressively restored her to the superb condition she's in today. A real labour of love and an appropriate and fitting tribute to their brother who was killed on the Nuremburg mission in March 1944 and also a tribute to those who flew from East Kirkby and especially those who didn't return there, as well as a tribute to the whole of Bomber Command.

The idea of a trip out and a bit of a photo opportunity started to form, so I got details of when she might be available.
Would anyone fancy a run out one day during the Summer? If so, I'll post more details.

Bet you needed it yesterday too - I could have done with an Elan with an outboard motor!

Anyway, I spoke to Lincs Aviation Heritage Centre today and got a prospective date for our visit:

It's Saturday 25th July. For a group booking of between 10 and 15 people the admission price comes down to £5.00 each (or £4.50 each if we end up with 15 or more bodies), so I asked them to pencil in 15 TBC.

Oh and this will include a photo opportunity on the port side of the Lancaster with the cars parked up against it.

I propose a rendez-vous at my place in Nottingham being as it's nice and central to set off at 9 or 10am.
Then travel out to Eask Kirkby taking in my favourite twisty B-road route through Notts & Lincs and arriving just before 11am.
This is because the Lancaster is usually taxied on a Saturday at 11am & 1.30pm (journey time is just under 2 hours, so although 10am is a more sociable time to depart, if we do we miss the earlier taxiing session).
Between or after the taxi runs/fitting in the photo opportunity we can browse round the museum, ooing and aahing at old bits of bent WW2 aircraft and enjoying the on-site facilities - it's really rather good, very authentic.

I would be continuing onto Skegness late afternoon, and participants can then either follow me the rest of the way or head back home by their preferred route.

How does that sound? I do have a backup date or two if the above one is unsuitable for the majority, but would rather use that as a fallback position if necessary.

One problem, Neil: this is the same weekend as the Silverstone Classic, which I'm going to. On the other hand, maybe it's an opportunity rather than a problem: racing on Friday and Sunday, appreciating beautiful old aircraft on the Saturday. Not a bad combo. Not bad at all.

Point taken. I just put Bishops Stortford to East Kirkby into AutoRoute - the journey there is as boring as hell but pretty direct and Nottingham is quite a large and rather unnecessary diversion.
However there is a compromise:
The fun really starts shortly after Newark when we turn off the A17 towards Stapleford.
So the thought is, why don't the Southern posse continue up the A1 and come off at the A46 North Newark junction, then meet the rest of us at the services on the A46/A17 roundabout, say 1/2hr after we set off from Nottingham?
