M100 rally - anyone up for a get together?

Postby maz_r » Wed 21.03.2012, 16:42

Personally, I was very disappointed to hear that there would not be a Donington this year; it was a good time to renew acquaintances and to put faces to names, not to mention my opportunity to ask a zillion dumb newbie questions (thanks Specky/Jim/Spud et al for answering with a gracious smile :smt023)

I did wonder, therefore, whether there might be any appetite for a LEC gathering this summer/autumn?

We could see if we could hire a rally field or similar and do the tent thing, close to a pub and curry house, if (and it's a big if) there was enough interest to make it fly....

Initial thoughts are a weekend (Friday - Sunday) in mid September somewhere in the middlish of the country (and, yes, I know the 'middle' is open to debate!), but, majority rules.

So, the question is, are we interested???

Your thoughts appreciated, as always :D

Several on here are going to Silverstone Classics (which I think is in June) which Club Lotus seem to be gently pushing as an alternative. Silverstone is fairly central too
Castle Combe is in late May, but that is a 1 day event & in the South West.
If you want to make a weekend of it, then something 'organised' would need to be arranged & being in the UK, we also need a contingency plan in case the weather is unfavourable.

Are there any beer festivals with camping? A small number of us go camping at Chappel beer festival in September but that is near Colchester which is way out near the east coast.

For me, the highlight of a big meet is the Elan convoy. Donington '07 & '08 were much better than last year (although '07 was before I got my Elan). DaveT's trip to the coast from Norwich in '09 during the 60th anniversary weekend was also great even though there were only 15 Elans taking part.

Yeah, the Donington entrance convoy was always an annual highlight.

Silverstone and Chappel both on my agenda.

Some may recall the Lake District camping event I organised a few years ago. Total wash-out but posed iniiation of the quality Ela hardtop from Kuching! :D

Happy to go for something similar again. Tying in with an event of some sort would always make it better though.

Suggestons welcome!

Silverstone is hardly "fairly central", Lake District is :)

Then there's this one Lotus festival. not what you could call central but entrance it cheap enough £15.00 for the two days and free camping.

May be we should organise our own meeting, there are a few monthly meets so may be an annual meet but need to select somewhere central with good facilities may be one of the smaller trackday venues like Bruntingthorpe or Elvington airfield, why leave it to another club?

Just had our registration come through for the Ypres Lotus Day :D
Bizarrely despite two ferry crossings this is closer to us than any meeting below the M4!
Brands and Silverstone are out for us due to work commitments but intend to go to Goodwood Festval of Speed as Lotus is the featured marque :D
We would be up for a get together in the autumn though.

Stoneleigh was an autumn parts fair, but that has not been held for about 3-4 years.
The annual festival was held at Malvern in 2010 because Donington was being re-developed to hold the British F1 GP. The lack of a track meant that this did not work as well as Donington.
In 2011, the festival was moved back to Donington, but moved to August. This did not work as well as it did when held in the spring so Club Lotus havee decided to move it back to the spring, but they decided this too late to organise Donington for 2012.

:agree: Elvington, and it's near York which is a fantastic place for a day out with easy access to East Coast.

Paul was suggesting that we use the Brands meet for the get together thereby overlapping the topics. :poke:

thank you RIP that was exactly my point :D Im sure people will disagree with this suggestion because that is nature of the beast you cant please everyone.... it would however make sense to attach the proposed meeting onto an already orgainised event. as obviously the cost factor of orgainising and planning such an event and agreeing who will physically man the event has already been dealt with... I feel sure that a lotus festival will make allowances for a group of lotus people looking to display there cars and at no cost to the orgainsers surely this will enhance the show and maybee ticket sales to themselves.. as the old saying goes it never hurts to ask.
