Hi All

It has been a while since my Elan has seen daylight, a few jobs all cropped up at once.

I have a new alternator to fit which I got from SJ Sports cars, however I am struggling to get the alternator back in the hole to old alternator came out.

Having examined it closely it looks to be slightly bigger than the old alternator, which explains my problem

Has anyone fitted the SJ alternator recently? if so how did you do it.

I am at the point where I think I need to remove the engine mount and pull the engine forward. Anyone know if this will give me more space?

Andy - how did you get on? Mine from SJS has just arrived.... they are pretty good for sourcing parts and cheaper than most, but I think 'customer service' is a thin concept for them. Mine seems to be the same size... not larger. Mike

Doesn't seem to be Steve you get now when you phone SJS, think he has some help. Don't think his new help has the same knowledge as Steve has.

New alternator is only marginally bigger and could only be seen when they were side by side. I had to remove the small metal tang just above the sump, alternator went in no bother once that was removed.

I have still not quite finished fitting the alternator as I made a newbie mistake.

Check the pulleys are the same on the old v new alternator as they were different (new alternator had an extra groove) on the one I received

I had everything back together and only noticed when I went to fit the belt, so have had to pull the alternator back out to swap over the pulleys

Been as slow job as I have been side tracked by my partners freelander failing its MOT and having to spend a week fixing that

Andy - finally finished..took me 4 hours in the end. I just couldn't fit the thing from underneath without some serious scrapes.. so decided to take off the drive shaft. Then it all went together quite well, and I changed the gear oil as well. Only problem now is that even though it is generating good power in the right levels, my RED battery light will not go out. Do I have to stick it on ELANSCAN for that. cheers Mike.

H2J "researched" this issue a few years back.

Elanscan will tell you how many volts you are getting but I think that is all.

Hi Mike, still not got round to finishing fitting my alternator, but will try to push on with it this week.

I have 2 thoughts
1. have you got the round connector pushed firmly into the back of the alternator.
2. Regulator on the alternator may be wired differently and the outputs in the connector are different to the standard alternator

Well this just keeps getting better.

Having noted the pulleys are different (3 groove v's 4 groove belt fitting) I tried to change the pulleys over only to find the original alternator has a shaft diameter of 15mm and the new alternator has a shaft diameter of 17mm. Also the pulley on the new alternator has a larger diameter.

not sure where to go with this now. No part number on the alternator to check it or fit it as is and see what happens.

Any suggestions?

Put it back together and ask for a new, correct alternator to be provided with a return shipping label included for the wrong one supplied.

If no no correct alternator is available ask for a FULL refund as well as a return shipping label.

There is no reason you should have to fix their mistake.

Send it back to SJ's as it is the wrong Alternator.

If I was to take a guess, they've bought up some cheap ones from the US and have not checked what is in the box before sending it out.

Years ago there was some investigation into your issues.
1 They took a punt at the Isuzu Impulse alternator for obvious reasons. It is 75 A rather than 60 A and is bigger in size and won't go through the gap without taking bits of suspension off.
2 There was a Group buyfrom RockAuto I think and they discovered that the pulley was wrong etc - see Sy's post on the last page viewtopic.php?f=46&t=4808&start=220
3 People found other alternators or were supplied refurbished alternators only to find that there are 2 versions of the round plug regulator. The wrong one makes the light stay illuminated. Hence I mentioned H2J -see here https://forum.lotuselancentral.com/view ... 13#p223290

That's why I'm rebuilding the old one.

Decision made then it will go back to SJ's.

I would consider having my old alternator rebuilt as it is only the bearings that have failed and I suspect I could probably mange that task myself if I could identify the correct replacement bearings

I purchased an alternator from SJ at the end of May, I have not fitted it yet, and now realise it also has the wrong pulley - for a 5 rib belt (whereas the car has a 4 rib belt). Spoke to SJ today, he say its OK, just fit the 4 rib belt, let it run in 4 of the 5 grooves. He has assured me that it is OK and the electrical connections will be correct. But he is happy for me to return it for a refund if I wish. Picture of the new alternator attached.
Has anyone fitted the exact same alternator and confirm it is OK in terms of pulley fit, pulley diameter and electrical functioning?

Nope, but if you have your old alternator check that 4 of the 5 grooves measures exactly the same across as the 4 grooves of the old alternator, check the angle of the 'V' and the depth of the 'V' ... if they look the same the belt will not be deformed so I'd agree with him, but if any are different, sent it back for sure. If you do use it, I suggest use the 4 grooves closest to the alternator just to give the bearings a slightly easier life - unless the belt looks to be out of line like that..

Hi Ken, I got the same story from SJ. Spoke to Steve himself and he said he has fitted them himself.

I am going to put mine back in this weekend. The belt does look like it fits the grooves on the pulley

Hi Andy, there is only about another inch of outward adjustment on the original alternators mount, so the bigger pulley is going to take it very close to the end stop - maybe needing a longer belt, also, the larger pulley will slow the alternator down which all seems a bit odd.

Chaps - just a quick update. Had the SJS alternator checked again today on the car... and, indeed, it only pumping out 13.1 volts... and should be betweewn 14.1-14.7 (if I read the service notes correctly); and we checked the wire-connector. The battery light on the dash remains on. I've spoken to SJS and they said send it back, if it's faulty after they've tested it, I 'll get a refund. That's fine (i expected nothing else)... but it cost me £180 quid to get the thing on the engine and now I have to take it off again, have the car off the road until I get another one, and then get the new one bolted on one! I'm thinking of having the old one refurb'd.... anyone know any good places?? M

Referb it yourself, it isn't difficult only a few screws and a meter required. There are a couple of YouTube videos to watch - will post later.

It's an oddity but after a lot of research I can supply the spares - Bearings, voltage regulator and brushes.

What is wrong with the old one?

Universal Rotating Electrics in Basildon will refurbish your original unit. Recon and replacement starters and alternators is what they do.Nippon Denso units similar to the Elan unit are used a lot on small plant equipment.
I contacted them about mine and they could supply a recon or service my unit, but I decided on a uprated unit from Rock Auto ( don’t bother more hassle than it’s worth, but it works fine once I got got it fitted.

Hi Pete,
A good reconditioner should be able to recondition a supplied unit, but are unlikely to be able to supply an exchange unit since there is no cross reference. Its a fairly well trodden path, wrong size, wrong voltage regulator, wrong pulley, wrong shaft... Be it he impulse "upgrade" from Rockauto or a replacement from a Lotus specialist it's never straight forward.

I've been in touch with the distributor that supplies the rebuilders and they could not supply a bill of materials only the comment "part has no alternative".

I think that the small plant equipment alternator that you are referring to is the one that the kit car guys like and is a common replacement for classics (I have one on a 60's elan) they're quite a lot smaller which is why they're so popular. Only 40amps though.
