Sounds like a helicopter

Postby BertBeck » Mon 09.01.2023, 18:20

Hi there,
Any help would be appreciated on this one. Couple of weeks ago I was out in the car, everything ok then stopped for a bit, started her up again and engine sounded rough as hell. Like a helicopter as some others on here have described it. Mis-firing and lumpy. Managed to get home but very little power, no engine warning light though. Started her up again the next day hoping it was just a glitch but still the same. Took car round to my usual garage and they had a play around, checking the leads etc and turns out it was arcing at the coil packs, a blue spark. I only fitted a new set less than 10,000 miles ago with new plugs and good quality leads. So I bought new coil packs, plugs, leads again and fitted it this morning, cleaned contacts etc but its still the same. Any ideas what it else it could be?

Cheers Bert

If it's misfiring and it's not the coils/leads, it might be injectors. They are paired, you should try to figure out which cylinders are firing and go from there. Someone here knows the pairing (ie which injectors are paired)

i onse had my car as described by there's only on f in Geof Smith "running like a tractor"
it turned out that when i accemptled the timing belt. i didnt tighten the tensioner pulley enough. which in turn allowed the belt to slip 1 or 2 teeth.
it was lucky i fixed it before it caused damage.

the timing belt being off was in the turbo SE car.

just my 2 cents. and i dont mean to alarm you a lot. but thats what happened to me.

Ive also had lumpy running on my NA recently. but that was the distributor cap contacts being corroded making bad sparks. and im assuming you mentioning coil packs means your running a turbo. so ther will be no distributor

After a bit of digging it turns out there's a good strong spark but no combustion on cylinders 2 and 4 which means injector failure presumably. Has anyone done this themselves, is it a nightmare?

I know you said there was no engine warning light, but have you done the "paper clip" test to see whether any error codes are stored? It's an easy 5 minute job. See here.....

For some reason, that link above doesn't work so go up to the top header/banner marked WikiLEC and search for Check Engine Light (CEL). This will give you a comprehensive, step by step guide with attendant error codes

Problem solved it seems!
Fitted a new set of injectors today https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191637275013 They come with clips and O-rings.
Had to wait about a fortnight for them but a lot cheaper than buying them in UK. Nearly 500 quid on one site.
Worked out just over 200 with the import duty/postage. Yeh shes running lovely now.
As previously mentioned they must be paired so if one fails you lose 2 cylinders.
These injectors are slightly shorter than the originals but they fit without issue, just a fiddly job accessing them and removing/refitting the clips.
Thanks all for the replies

I can do but my son has taken the old ones to work to bench test them and maybe repair them.
They look almost the same, just the new ones are a few mm shorter.

Side by side photos of those injectors and stock here: viewtopic.php?f=80&t=28320&hilit=funelan+injectors&start=180

Glad they worked out for you! Worked for me too.
