VIN stickers .Landscape or portrait + rubber bonnet stays

Odd question ..

Are your vin stickers and engine number sticker from wing to wing or bonnet to windscreen ?

Some seem to have left the factory as bonnet to windscreen (though not many). Im trying to work out if this is FED / ROW .

Bonnet to windscreen on both of mine Clemo. With the VIN I'd closest to the near side

Huh ? Had three SE's and all were bonnet to windscreen and everyone I've seen have been. VIN label with clear surround measures 124mm wide so don't see how it can go wing to wing ..

(Engine Number is wing to wing and read from standing in front on the 'L' Reg, need to check on the other...)

I was wondering if this was an S2 thing but Rambo says his are top bonnet to windscreen .

So no real sense in what goes where and why .

Perhaps the "wing to wing" varietals have had front end resprays and they've stuck the stickers on incorrectly

The Fed oddity is easy to reason. There doesn't appear to be any space to stick it in the usual position

I was chatting to the heritage guy at Lotus this morning re Jim Clark and bits and bobs . We were trying to find out if there was any rhyme or reason why m100's have the vins in different areas . As far as he was aware they should be like mine with the centre of the 2 stickers matching up to the outer almost arrow like point on the bonnet stay as it moulds to the flat part . But he hadn't seen enough to comment . to which i mentioned that others are in different places and polarisation . Hence this thread

Maybe the later stickers are smaller .
He said if you request a new vin sticker and void cover then we will be sent the last of the sticker run for that type , which is also the same type font and size for the last of the esprits .

But that doesn't mean that all those side to side / landscape have been resprayed . Just that for some reason they are the other way round .

I think this has been discussed on the 'bonnet gas strut' thread but there seems to be some variation in bonnet support buffers ...
Mine has two on the rear hinge bolt, two just behind the headlight pods (as Rambo's) and two at the front, and the nearside front rather dictates the VIN label orientation and position ...

Wow, yes indeed you seem to have more supports than I do!? (which means mine is lighter!!! )
It's the first time I notice that, especially at the front! (not sure near the hinges)

Are they actually useful to help the bonnet align correctly?

Off topic (a bit), but the parts guide shows 6 rubber buffers for the bonnet supports and 3 different pairs of bolts to attach them.

I never noticed how many are on the FED model. I will look tomorrow

my FED is missing the front two down between the lights - bit of a PITA actually as if I leave the hood up for a time on the stay, the opposite side of the hood is below the body line when I put the hood back down. bugs the hell out of me..

I noticed quite a few cars are like that, including mine.
I still wonder why but I think I once noticed it may be the clamshell that is not straight since there is a small spacer for some reason ... I would have to check if it's not just my imagination or memory ...

opposite side to where the hood stay attaches at the front.
Looking at the front of the car - stay is on front right of hood and front left corner drops below the camshell / light line
If I had some bumper I could adjust them to raise the hood line a little..

Last time this happened (hood up for several weeks as I did a lazy cam belt replacement), I packed the bottom corner with rags - closed the hood down and parked it in the sun..
worked a treat - for a while..

my blue car and red car were both different - 6 adjustable 'bolts' on the blue one, 4 on the red one.

For the info of anyone who thinks about adding some - yes, it makes the alignment of the bonnet far better....

..... but they may not be easy to retro-fit.

The ones at the sides of the bonnet (in the clamshell gutter) are just M8 bolts with a nut either side of the clamshell to lock it into place - so easy to deal with (I replaced all mine with stainless fittings as a matter of course).

Likewise, the ones at the hinges are just bolts.

It is the front 2 which are awkward to do, as the original fitting is a bonded female M8 fitting on the underside of the clamshell, with a locknut on the top side.

To do it properly would require removal of the clamshell......

..... but if you can 'just' remove the front bumper, loosen the front clamshell bolts and lift it a bit, there is no reason why a suitable length bolt cant be fitted with a nut either side of the fibreglass, as per the side ones. Just make sure the bolt isn't too long or it may fowl the metalwork underneath.

If i were to do it, I think I'd just use a flanged M8 stainless nut and a dab of sikaflex underneath the clam - let the glue set by clamping it down with a locknut from the top - then refit the clamshell, then find the correct length of bolt that will fit without fowling - finally fit a locknut to the bolt and adjust appropriately.

I did look at retro fitting and even got some hardware to do it with.. I then decided to leave if for another day..
I may drop the front bumper off over winter to do some general tidying and I'd like to add some DRL - I get nervous about being seen by these huge SUV's! - I guess that may be the time to do it.

your custard has a silver engine number sticker with a white(r) vin sticker ,
They are not the same as the black one .

Reason ?
Maybe respray , some that i have seen that have been resprayed cary the silver type sticker

The comparison is that the black car has both stickers in the more ivory looking type .
