Bonnet prop

I bought this bonnet clip from SJ Sportscars, and I have no idea where it goes. I'm missing something I think, I've always propped it by putting the hook end in the bottom section and the straight end in the latch. Is this clip useable or am I missing another piece?

I'll throw some pictures in here later, can't figure out how to resize on my phone.

This is the top... I just stick the rod in behind the latch. It looks like I'm missing something but I can't figure out how it goes together from the parts manual.

It goes in a hole on the left (UK near) side (looking from the rear) or right side (looking from the front) of the car.
Once in the hole, the center pin gets pushed down to clear the "hook opening" and hold it in place.

Just to further clarify B-C-N's comments, the clip you have purchased (Part no. A100B6047F) is to retain the bonnet prop when not in use and attaches to the bonnet at the bottom edge on the right hand side, when viewed from the front and fully open.

So when not in use the prop stays clipped to the bonnet at both ends and flush with it.

That's the one I used.....

.... I see John says that it should be 90degrees - but as I didn't have one to compare it to, I went for the Defender one and it fited and worked - so was good for me!

(I only used it for about a month before fitting the gas rams though!)

How do you get it to stay? Glue? The weight of the prop pulls it right out. Where does the other end clip to?

I know something is still missing because my latch plate has a captive nut with nothing going to it.

I guess it really isn't a big deal, just curious. It props and latches, that's all it really needs to do.

If the picture you posted is accurate, the lower section (bushing / retainer) goes in the hole first. It should be very tight. The clip's "shaft" then goes into the bushing/retainer and should remain in place.

On the original design, the boss goes into the hole and pin gets pushed through it to spread it and make it a tight fit.

The blue square bit goes into the hole in the bonnet, yes? With the open end facing toward the inner part of the engine bay I assume.

The plate I was talking about with the missing piece circled in yellow seems to be where the bonnet prop should be mounted to the bonnet, whereas mine is just sitting loose in the engine bay.

No, the red part gets pulled out enough to make the blue part fit into the hole and then the red part gets pushed thru the blue part to spread it so it stays in the hole and gets out of the way of the rod. The direction you describe is correct

The rod clip goes into a hole where the red circle is. The hole may be obscured by the windshield washer hoses.

I found the hole on the underside of the bonnet, the square bit fits snugly in, but it pops back out. I wasn't able to get the little rod part to shove in at all. I'll have to play around with it later... As far as the bonnet stay assembly, I'm missing 62 and 63, and 60 looks different (I don't have a loop end).

Thanks for all your help, the exploded diagrams are a bit confusing when things were never right since I had the car.

Try tapping the round rod with a hammer once the clip is seated in the square hole. Once the end of the round rod is almost flush with the clip, use a small punch on the rod to get the rod to clear space to allow the bonnet prop to slide in.

Looking at BCN's pic, you have now found the correct hole for it Getting that little pin to knock in takes quite a push. Try using a hammer and punch. It's gonna take a lot more force than you think.
It's dark here now but I could take a picture tomorrow.

I bought a batch of them a few years ago as I needed 1 for my car, I can't find the paperwork to say where I bought them from or what car they came from. (I'm useless at keeping records) I thought that they were from a Corsa, but I currently can not find any info to confirm this, Looking at pictures, I don't see the correct part. Still looking and will get back if I can find where I bought them from.

Well... I think i figured out the clip. I had put it on a vise to seat it so I could break loose that plastic rod that was stuck in there and I gave it a couple of light taps, so that worked.
Then I put it in the hole it goes in and was able to tap it in past the clip section and then I got a punch and popped the plastic rod the rest of the way in... only it went in way too far and the whole clip popped out and the rod is hiding in the bonnet's insides.
I tried to figure out a way to salvage the clip with no rod, but my methods involving a drill and pop-rivets ended up with a stuck rivet in there and the section that needed to be expanding not expanding. Trying to remove the rivet I shattered the whole piece.
Honestly without the bonnet prop being attached to the bonnet with that bracket I'm missing, the clip is useless anyway. I either need to source that bracket or figure out how to make one, then I can go about ordering another clip and maybe I'll be able to put it in right next time now that I know how it works.

I never thought such a small clip could cause so many problems. Wait until you need to remove the alternator

Looks like a ~1990 Ford Mondeo/Transit/Ka/Grandad (and maybe Cortina and Capri and Escort) clip.



Not much help as you are in New Jersey… except that W702380-S300 throws up a lot of hits on US sites for Ford Cougars and Contours.
