rear ended

Postby ashm » Fri 09.04.2010, 10:50

On my way into work this morning, got smacked from behind by an X-type. Elan's a mess :(

Currently sat in the passenger seat waiting for the recovery company. Not a happy camper. Rear offside wheel's at a funny angle :(

Are you ok?

The Elan can be replaced or hopefully repaired.

I'm alright, just disappointed to see the car like this after having put in so much effort. I doubt it'll be repairable - the wishbones look ok but the angle the wheel's at makes me worry about the chassis. The car was hit hard enough from the rear right corner to cause cracks along the left side of the body and the driver's door doesn't line up properly anymore.
Not a great start to the day!

That's a bit of bad news, again as long as no one is hurt, cars can be replaced/repaired.
Rear ended! at least it's his insurance company that will have to pay and if the damage is bad which it sounds like it is, another Elan bites the dust b u double g rrrrrrrrrrr.

Adam,

Sorry to hear of this It's bad enough when you do it to yourself (like me) but when some other fool does it to you it's 10 times worse. I'll send you a PM with some thoughts.

I was coming off a roundabout in the right hand lane of a two lane exit when a van in the left lane decided he wanted to stay on the roundabout and suddenly tried to force his way across in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and stopped dead (thanks Bob - otherwise maybe I'd have been judged at fault!) and the poor guy in the Jag behind had no chance to avoid me.

Van driver legged it

Adam, I'm so sorry. Having lived through this very experience recently
good that your OK. Car #886 took hit rear, shock wave went through tub, pass.
door popped hinges and around to front bumper. (Run over by a truck).
Tub and bulkhead cracked beyond repair on this side of the pond, NO PARTS.
Go through the grieving process, Keep away from sharp objects.
Alcohol helps.

Adam...

:censored: ... really sorry to hear this, rotten luck, just glad to hear you are OK.

If you need anything, (a lift, extra pair of hands, or help beating up van drivers) I am only 'round the corner and glad to help in anyway...

Hope you are back Elanning one way or another soon

Thanks David & Steve! Not a lot to be done about it unfortunately, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

The car appears to be in good hands though, the insurance company have had it trailered off to this place:
www.macoachworks.co.uk/index.html

I was a bit worried when the insurance company told me they were sending it all the way to Hampstead, but M&A appear to be ok. I just had a chat with them on the phone and they seem a decent operation. I told them I could probably provide them with some parts at good prices to keep the repair cost down, and they've told me the mechanic will call me to discuss things before he gets back to the insurance company with his assessment. Fingers crossed!

Looking at my photos, there's definitely serious damage to the rear floorpan sections and all the rear body sections and bootlid. The exhaust's wrecked, the offside rear suspension's wonky, the light unit got totally minced. I just hope the chassis is still straight. On the plus side, I guess this is the corner of the car with the least pricy/complicated bits in.
Given that a replacement non-cat exhaust is pretty inexpensive, it might be a repair job if I can source some of the fibreglass bits and the light assembly reasonably cheaply. Anybody recently switched to elise lights? ;)

really sorry to hear this, its so gutting when you car gets damaged. At the end of it there are more important things though ie everyone will live on!!! At least you have the experience now to sort out most of the elan niggles :( :( :(
You really should try and buy the car back if it is a write off as you could make a few quid towards some upgrades and also help keep the bits living on others cars. :(

Hope you get a good outcome after all this.

Adam

Really sorry to hear your news but glad that at least you are Ok, it wasnt your fault and the insurance company have sent the car to a specialist.

Rumour has it your new neighbour arranged the accident as he wanted to be "the only Red Elan driver in the village"

Even the boot and the hood cover are cracked. And there are little cracks with white fibres poking out on the nearside too...
