Silver foil replacement under bonnet/hood

I have had my bonnet resprayed and completely stripped it beforehand, the insulation was falling to bits and the IR shielding silver foil wasn't much better. Now I am putting it all back together, has anyone done the same and have a source for the foil, or does the foil even actually do anything??

I used something very similar to this:

5 years later and shed loads of heat under the bonnet and it hasn't shifted at all. Can't say if it does anything but I put it back exactly where I stripped it from and the radio works fine.

I don't think the silver foil is OEM ?? Or am I wrong ?

I had the original foam bonnet liner on mine and when I removed it the silver foil definitely looked OEM. Are you missing it on your car?

The foil is OEM for sure, I have seen it on many cars, it is a shield against electrical interference and earthed through the engine bay earth braids.

The inside of my bonnet is completey stripped so want to put things back in the correct order.

The foil lines the back of the insulation and then extends up to the hinges, so that it can be earthed, I hope the pictures make sense?

When I replaced mine I put the aluminium self adhesive foil direct onto the underside of the bonnet and not onto the insulation. I then used the special heat resistant spray glue to attach the new bonnet insulation to the aluminium foil. It has held without any issues. I'm not sure that they would have attached the foil to the insulation first and then installed it. Is it possible that the glue between bonnet and foil gave up first when removing the old insulation?

I don't think my S2 has it.

Thanks for this, makes sense yes. My bonnet is bare at the minute and I was just going to buy one of the rubber/foam ones advertised on here so hadn't thought about anything else.

Haven't experienced any issues driving it around as it is though.

Must be an SE thing then unless anyone with an S2 lets us know otherwise. I know it was earthed so I presumed it had some radio shielding properties but I put it back because I thought it may also reflect some of the heat away from the engine bay and protect the bonnet paintwork.
