Falling pillar seal question

Hi,

I have a question about the hood falling pillar seal, and wondered if anyone can help me out.

Does the hole at the top end of the seal actually serve any purpose?

It does not have any type of fastener in it in my car and I'm wondering if I have something missing, or if it was something that was intended to be used but was never installed.

I don't see any part number listed for anything to plug the hole or any way to attach it to the frame. I wonder if I could just fill the hole?

Any ideas or advice appreciated.

Looks exactly like yours on my ‘95 S2, Wayne. Hole in seal, but no plug. I have OEM falling pillar seals; all the rest are Jamie replacements. I know Jamie has been working on some ‘proper’ FP seals too, so may be worth asking him for a view

Both my original seals had the hole but on removing them there wasn't any evidence of any purpose of the holes, but then my hood has been replaced so maybe the hood company didn't bother putting back what should have been there ?
Somebody with a totally standard roof might be able to help?

Well, as far as I know, mine’s both standard and original - but I have a late car (S2). My suspicion, though no hard evidence, is that early cars had a fixing of some kind, and they never bothered to change the seal moulding. Certainly my hood frame is the original, and there’s no sign of a hole in that through which any fixing might have passed. I believe my hood and seals are original too; I have a fairly full set of documentation and there’s no hood purchase listed.

I have both the early and later style seal sat here on my desk and neither come with anything to plug the hole. And I do not see anything listed in the parts manual as a separate part.

Would still be interesting to hear from other people if there is anything used to fill the hole.

Looking at info received so far. I will probably just go ahead and fill the hole in my seals.

I was hoping for a few more replies to help me make a decision on what to do about the hole in the seal.

Replies so far have seemed to indicate removing it. I will probably go with this idea.

I pulled a pair of used falling pillar seals from Dave S.'s car "Blackie" and both sides have the hole and no indication that anything was put in them.

It is possibly an index or something to do with the mold process.

The hole definitely has some significance, but it would only seem to be on some cars
I'm sure Jamie would know all about it.

I think Jamie's response would be along the lines of:- the hole is there to let the water out of the sponge material the original seals are made from!

The rubber upgrades don't need the hole!
