speedo and rear plate

Should my car have the rear number plate perspex cover (it doesn't). 91 se. If it should does anyone know where I can get one. Also my speedo is just a rough guide as to the speed I am actually doing and is reading around 25 to 30 mph out. When I am doing what i reckon to be 65-70mph the speedo is reading 90. Is this common and does anyone know the fix for this. Again any help on these matters greatly appreciated.

Steve, do i see non original wheels on your car ?, what size are they ?, se's are 15", & s2's are 16", if yours are any different it will probably affect the accuracy of your speedo readings.

Either someone has removed your plastic cover and then the finish won't look very good, or more likely you have the newer style number plate holder that was used from about 91/92 that never had the plastic cover.

the wheels shouldn`t really make much difference to u`r speedo, unless u`r aftermarket wheels have a higher profile tyre than norm, ie 16" should be 45`s and 17" should be 40`s, so this keeps the overall size the same.

Whats size wheels and tyres have u got on?

u should be able to tell if the Plinth needs the perspex cover, have a look through some pic`s showing the rear end.

ps, can u see 2 holes below the number plate near the corners which go through to the boot, if so this is to keep the perspex from steaming up

Wheels are 15" with I think, 205x50x15 tyres. I can't check as I am offshore just now so I don't reckon the wheels/tyres are putting the speedo reading so far out. Don't think there are drain holes at corners of number plates, again something to check when I get home.

Perspex cover = £20 from SW Lotus at Donington this year. I think they had at least a few dozen left. Normal price is about £65 IIRC ??

The perspex cover was actually banned by the Police/Dept. of Transport back in the early ninetiesas they found they were misting up and obscuring the number plate. The perspex was also causing flashback as the cars sped through speed cameras at outrageous speeds.

Still got mine though as it looks neater. Just passed the MOT so no worries there.

my speedo was doing that. Somedays it would read higher than others for the same amount of revs.

It's stopped doing that now, in fact, it's stopped reading anything now either my cable has broken or the gear has siezed or the speedo has gone. Haven't had time to check which yet. It's annoying since if drive it hard the engine light comes on then can't go above 3500 rpm

Hi everyone,
Now my car is running fine again i was wondering what i can do about the vague speedo. Tyre sizes are standard, when i am running at 3000rpm car is reading 75mph and when pulling 3500rpm speedo is reading 90mph. Could someone tell me correct speeds for these rev's and posible fix for this problem. If it is the speedo itself which needs replacing any ideas where I can get a new one. Thank's again
