Arrggghh. Was dropping the car off at my mate's for him to get the calipers off and get the MOT retest done. Locked it and walked away then remembered I'd forgotten something so went to unlock it and the lock turns and I can feel something going on but the door doesn't unlock.
Everything is fine on the passenger side and from the inside the driver's door locks and unlocks happily on the button although the Central locking seemed to throw a little bit of a tizzy at one point before settling.
Any ideas what this could be? The lock when turned is definitely doing something as I can feel bits moving but it isn't popping the lock open. Something dropped off, popped out of alignment etc?
Goes off to look at service manual and search the archive.
They say these things happen in threes so what's next?

There is a metal rod that fits into the key mechanism. Sounds like it has fallen out.
Afraid you need to take the door panel off and have a look around. There are some pics in the manuals somewhere, but it is a pig of a job.

Oh joy! Ta for that though. I'd say that sounds very plausible as the lock is secure and in situ and is definitely doing something. Also with the mechanism itself working from the inside it does indeed sound like the link between the barrel and the mechanism.
That's this weekend's fun and games then, I've been meaning to take the door trim off anyway to do some tidying up.
