New Custom Intercooler

Postby chrisP » Mon 27.07.2015, 13:39

I just thought I would post some pictures of an intercooler that I have had made for my restoration. I had it made bigger, with a thicker and better flowing core. Its all aluminium, but weighs exactly the same as the original. Tested to 30psi it is really well made. All I have to do now is get the car back on the road and test it out!!

Looks really nice. Price? and did you have to adapt the pod in any way to take advantage of the bigger frontal area of the unit.

Around the £300 mark, I trimmed the surround by about 12mm at the bottom and 13mm on the right hand side, changed the foam surround at the same time. I also had the boss and hence the bolt that fouls the radiator support mounted higher, So I could remove the intercooler quite easily now.

He was at Brands Hatch Lotus Weekend last year - remember lots of nice CF bits on it but I didn't know about the big intercooler to take a look.

Sorry , only just seen the comments. I am very happy with the fit and finish of the intercooler, I believe that it has made a positive improvement to the power delivery. But I cannot do a back to back comparison as it will take too long to swap the old intercooler. I would highly recommend Ash as a maker of both intercoolers and radiators, his workmanship is flawless.

No salt on the roads in Suffolk, but farmers are leaving an awful lot of s**t on the roads

Hi All,

We have also been making this intercooler since 2013 and have sold a few to various members. The core is maxed out to fill the tanks unlike the narrow original. I am told that a fair amount of cutting and shaving needs to occur on the fibreglass trunk to make it fit and it is not a job for the faint hearted. I am just posting details of our new radiator that has addressed all of the comments made over the last 2 years on the fit required in both the federal model and the UK model.

How much work are we talking about here? It sounds like some cutting of the enclosure to fit the larger box is all that's needed (plus all the removal steps of course). Is this the case? If so, that's not all that bad.

I did not think much at all. A lift is definitely a plus. You will want to surround the new unit with
weather stripping so that all the available air goes through it. Difficulty I'd say a 6 out of 10.
The performance was noticeable on my High Boost Fed. Elan.
