.....if the internals have a code number stamped on them, then it should be possible to have a key cut to that 'code'.
If not, then by carefully dismantling the internals, you will have a set of sliding 'tumblers' which are spring loaded towards the centre, when the key goes in, it pushes them outwards by the amount of metal on the key (does that make sence?) If the correct key is in the lock, all of the tumblers will allign with the outer cylinder and allow the cylinder to turn in the housing.
I don't know how many tumblers are in an elan lock, but on BL cars there are 5. As each has 4 possible possitions that it can be installed, and there are 5 different ones availlable (numbered 0, 1, 2, 3 & 4), it allows for a possible 5x4x5 combinations of key (ie only 100 different keys on an 'FS' blank are possible).
The locks can be dismantled by removing the end circlip and dropping it on the floor.
reassembly takes longer, 'cos first you have to find all the bits
Best way to do it is to insert the key in the lock first, THEN remove the circlip and withdraw the cylinder - nothing will fall on the floor, and you save lots of time (YES - I know from experience

) then, as you withdraw the key, each tumbler can be removed and the orientation/number noted as you go.
Another possibility, if you have a key that doesnt fit the locks you have (as there are only a limited number of different tumblers available to the manufacturer) and you have 'spare' locks, they can be dismantled and re-built with less than the 'correct' number of tumblers to still work, but put into the slots that fit your key.
It is easier to undertand if you have the lock in front of you, as opposed to reading this rubbish - but it does all fall into place when you look at the bits!
