Lotus Elan Central

Hi Guys,

Saturday AM some disenfranchised individual decided to smash in my drivers side window in order to take....one type depth guage tool and one tyre pressure tool neither of which were on display.

I've now moved the car to my folk's garage about 2 miles from Loughborough. My question is this, can Autoglass simply replace it and does anyone know how much it would cost? Any other tradesmen recommendations appreciated.

sorry to hear your problem.

I knew a guy who just left always the doors unlocked so hopefully no one would cut the top or break the windows.

I cannot advise regarding autoglass in your part of the world, but I can say it is not a HARD job to replace it, but given the Elan is a bit fragile in the door, I would definitely take it to a dealer or place that is comfortable with an Elan's door!!!!!!!

You could likely need some runners/guides and the bottom clip to the window beyond the actual glass, so again another reason for being near the parts needed.

Lea, where in the UK are you?
A specialist would be my prefered choice rather than autoglass.
Are you claiming on your insurance?
You should be able to pick a glass up for £50-£70. So if you know someone who is handy with cars this obviously would be the best option to save losing any no claims.
I think SJ's have them (as a last resort) for £100+.

Lea,

There are a couple of people on here breaking Elans.
If you can get a window, I'm less than 20 miles away and have just repaired my window motor, which is effectively the same job.
Give me a yell if you want me to do it for you at the weekend.

Had to order a new one from Lotus for £126.30! I'm currently in London and the car is in Whitwick, Leics. The offer for help fitting it is very generous. My dad will take it to the local garage for fitting. If that doesn't work out I might call on your services.

lea, you should go for that offer! it might cost you a lot and any place not familiar with the Elan can break small pieces that could cause more headaches!!

Turns out Lotus only do the green tinted glass now. I left the job of finding a man to do the job to my father as I'm London based. Fair dues the guy has done the job and all for £40. The offer was very kind and if I'd been around to co-ordinate I would have taken you up on it.
