check strap pin/bolt

Postby theelanman » Thu 14.02.2008, 09:05

my wife opened the passenger door yesterday and it made a terrible creaking sound and other bizarre noises Id never heard before.....
I asked he to stop and open and close the door again...as she did I saw the whole 'a' panel move and the door swing open alot further than Id ever seen before....I started to investigate and found that the pin holding the check strap to the car had sheared off....and therefore I had no check strap stopping the door.......
anyway now I know what it is, what should I do????
is there a special pin or am I ok to just drop in a bolt.......sorry what I mean is that Ive dropped a bolt in as a temporary measure until I gauge opinion or find the correct part.......otherwise I'll just leave the bolt in
cheers
G

Mine did exactly the same thing 3 years ago and I ran around for a while using a rusty old bolt as a temporary measure.

I eventually got 2 door strap check pins (assuming the other would also give up the ghost) from a Lotus garage. They were so cheap that it wasn't worth them putting through any paperwork so I got them free - yes - Lotus parts for free !!!

From memory they were about 60p each and the new ones seemed to be aluminium or a non rusting alloy.

I think the part you need is A100B6020F (p39 of parts manual) and is described as a sleeve pin

Gareth - I'll see if I have the old one that wasn't knackered in my spares box - I may have kept it just in case.

went to the garage today and asked if he had the pin or something similar....he did so Ive changed the bolt out for a propper hinge pin :-)
sorted.....(and its supposed to be stonger stuff than a bolt he reckons...not sure how as bolts are stronger in shear than tension but what the heck...its a purpose made bit of kit ;-))))
cheers for the help guys
