Butterfly Clip

2 steps Forward and 1 Step Back

1. Just got the HiSpec/Bob Brown brakes fitted all round - Absolute Magic!!!
2. MoT Passed at first submission!
3. Out for a celebratory trip in super sunny weather
4. Winding down drivers door window - Clunk in drivers door - butterfly clip failure.

I've successfully removed all necessary door trim and got the window lifted and supported on the bobbins using copper wire - just like the old railway carriage door windows of yesteryear positioned by the leather strap.

Advice please on repairs -
Do I remove the drive motor and mech to fit a replacement butterfly clip or can it be fiddled on in situ?
Whilst it is all relatively stripped do I clean up and relubricate any of this mechanism ?
What type of grease ?
Anything else that merits attention whilst the trim is off the door?

What's broke, Is it just the clip? or the window carrier which has the clip on it?

Looking from the drivers seat the left hand (forward) white wing is missing, the right hand remains in place,
The plastic 'C' clip for the groove on the outside of the drive spigot has broken and fallen into the bottom of the door and the spigot is no longer through the hole in the glass.
The spigot and its groove appear to be OK.
The motor appears to drive the mechanism up/down the guide channel correctly.
The window glass moves reasonably easily in the 2x guide channels.

Is the spigot part of the window carrier and does the butterfly clip 'push fit' onto the spigot and get then retained by the 'C' clip after locating the glass on the spigot?
I cannot really see the arrangement from the parts drawing or from the relevant manual sections.

I dont believe you can replace the butterfly without removing the motor mechanism as you need to bend the tab on the end of the rail and slip it off the end in order to change it out.

I just have had the same experience, (400m from the MOT station after it (finally) passed!), so you have my sympathies.

Not having a butterfly clip to hand, but wanting to drive the car, i fitted an 'e' clip to replace the broken butterfly clip and it has held fine. You can do this with the window and mechanism in place, even if i did loose a little knuckle blood. It was a tight fit but you wouldn't want it loose.

I will be ordering 2 butterfly clips from SJ's, as my NS window motor needs a rebuild so i'll replace both sides but i consider this something i can live with until the weather turns back to drizzle.

Progress update.
Yesterday I managed to remove the broken butterfly clip without taking the motor drive mech out:

1. fasten 2x pieces of cord or wire to the window bottom bobbins, lead these up through the door top and raise the glass to its normal high location. Tie off the cord/wire to support the glass.
2. Operate the motor mechanism to locate the drive spigot above the door reinforcing bar.
3. There is now enough clearance for the broken butterfly clip to be eased off the spigot and (when it arrives) the replacement to be fitted.
4. Hopefully with the drive spigot above the reinforcing bar there should be enough slack in the glass location to allow it to be easily located onto the drive spigot and the securing clip fitted to the spigot groove.

All fingers crossed!

Don't forget to examine the carrier/slider, there's a good chance it's an early version (not modified)

And chances are it's broke or getting close to breaking.

Just repaired failing window mechanism. What did I learn? Lable the various screws you could be delayed in the repair and forget what goes where. You do need to take the wiper motor and runners out if you need to replace the slider as well as the butterfly clip because the end tab needs opening to put in the new slider and the whole job is easier to tackle when its all out. Buy for both doors, you'll probably need to do the other side in the near future if one side is gone. The big bobbings on the bottom of the window seem to fall off easily so use thread sealer when you put them back. Don't loose that little retaining plate on the other side of the bobbings. I was quoted £39 for this tiny piece.! My search in the door bottom was in vain but then I found it behind the metal reinforcement a third of the way up the door ( it forms a ledge with the outside of the door). Check adjustment of all 3 channels to get the best sliding action of the glass before fitting it to the motor mechanism. The glass runs awfully close to that reinforcement bar across the door. I wouldn't be suprised if it wasn't responsible for taking off a few of the retaining clips on the end of the spigot. Check yours before finishing the job but beware that too much adjustment will affect the top of the glass seal with the roof rubbers when the window is fully up. The whole job isn't too difficult but takes longer than you expect. Good luck with yours.
