Noticed yesterday, that when the Elan is idling at standstill and you operate the window motor, especially upwards, it causes the engine to lose power and almost stall. Any ideas what this could be?

Just the consumption of power ... The alternator needing more effort to turn it ... slowing the engine down.

Normal for an old window assembly which is succumbing to high friction (dirt, grime, lack of lubrication, dirty sliders and rails) some of the fore and aft sliders have rollers in which fall out after a few decades of use.
Usually more noticeable when the car it's at idle..... and the window or windows hit the stops at the top of there travel.

Brilliant answers, thanks. I'm in the process of stripping the doors so I'll try to relubricate the rollers and mechanisms, to minimise the effect, and safeguard future operation.

Good thinking,
It might also be as well to check the
tickover just in case you have it on the low side of 950RPM ... if so, it would accentuate the problem.
