Top stop

Hi just taken my pas. door pannel of, under leather elbo pad I found someone had cut a hole to line up with the rear top stop mounts. I have now descovered that the hole of the rear top stop ( what the bobin should hit on ) is missing. Any idears why this has been removed ? is it a comon trick to save doing a job the correct way ? all seems to work fine without it. Should I worry and try to get / make another or leave it be ?

The holes are to assist in alligning the window with the winshield frame and top. The mechanic did this the last time the car was in for work. Now the passinger side glass actually seals. No more soggy wife!

Does that mean that there is a simple way to get the window to go that extra quater inch to close fully and keep the water out ? (well, not completely out, but a bit better)?

Great i will leave it alone for now then. But I can't help but wonder ,I can see the point of cutting a hole to ajust the stop but why then remove the stop ? If it would not go high enough why not make the holes longer ? I don't think the glass is as secure when up as it is only locked into a bobin at the top. I think when I get time i will look further into this one.

Also bear in mind that with the upstop cone(s) and brackets missing, the rigidity of the window in the full "up" position will be greatly reduced.
This in turn puts extra load on the sliders/screws which are prone to failing anyway...

If the required height could not be attained with the adjustment slots available, I would have thought a better option would be make the slots longer - not throw away the part....

Its been a while since i looked at this problem, in fact so long ago I had forgotten it was a problem I had ! I found this old post of mine searching for a solution to the problem I now have. Anyway, I have just fitted new A pillar seals, drivers side fantastic but the passenger side just won't line up with the closed window correctly. Having stripped the door I found, surprise, the rear top stop bracket is missing. So this is whats happening, when the window reaches the front top stop it rotates towards the top of the A pillar as there is no rear stop. The glass just won't sit correctly in the seal but over the top. Its almost as though the a pillar is at the wrong angle. I think I need to move the hole door rearward as panel gaps are way out and glass is too close to a pillar but this won't be a problem I just need to make some shims up.

What I wondered is, has anyone got an old rear top stop bracket I could either borrow or beg ? not worried about condition I could just fabricate a new one but without stripping the other door, a real pain, I don't know exactly dimensions angles etc. The glass has both it's bobbins so no problem there. Door shims would be useful as well if anyone has some spear knocking about.

The car has been of the road for the last couple of years, work and family commitments and the fact I got wet every time it rained. This winter I have got back to working on it ready for the spring, all sorted I believe ( for the moment ! ) apart from this window problem.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
