Door Removal

Apparently my Élan isn't in enough bits so I want to remove the door too.
It really would make life easier whilst working on the front outrigger if it wasn't swinging in the way every few seconds. Everything looks pretty straightforward apart from detaching the wiring loom. Where can I get to it? Can I detach it under the dash or is there some connector in the door that I just can't see?

Anyone done it before? Any help greatly appreciated.

The whole door wiring loom passes through a rubber grommet into the car (up behind the dashboard) where it connects with a multipin plug (or it might be 2, I can't remember).

As such. if you reach up under the dash, (by the top door hinge - which you might need to get to anyway ) you can simply unplug the door from the car (electrically speaking!) pull the grommet out with the wires going through it, and remove the door.


(I have to warn you though, getting the grommet back in when refitting the door wasn't the nicest job I've ever had to do on the car )

Got underneath the dash and disconnected it this afternoon. Interesting connector with the little slide. Can what you mean about the grommets being tricky in the reattachment too...

I think I found that the easiest way (for me, anyway) to re-fit the grommets is to fit them before bolting on the hinges - but that means having a willing assistant to hold the door in the correct place - and quite still - for a while. I seem to remember using a Black and Decker workmate to hold it in roughly the right place with my son steadying it whilst i inserted the grommets, then fitted the hinges to the 'A' pillar.
