Windscreen Tint Colour Availability

Postby peteoddcar » Tue 10.10.2017, 19:29

I am in the process of having the screen changed under my insurance. Autoglass have told me that only green tint screens are available and my car has bronze tint.
A well known independent glass supplier has told me the glass is not available to order in any colour so suggests going to a Lotus dealer that holds stock - Autoglass have told me they are sourcing through the Lotus dealer network.

Has anyone had the same experience ?

Any ideas?

I have had a different experience with another old car. When I went through the questions they knew the full spec. and even that it should have a top tint in blue or green. Glass for classic cars is pretty much made to order it was Autoglass and I had to wait for a couple of weeks.

Let them do their job and hold out for a brown one!

have previous experiences with Autoglass not resulted in a requirement for new 'A' pillar seals too.....
I seem to remember that the seals were not available at the time so it took ages to sort....
I cant remember who it was but they destroyed his seals trying to fit the screen
just a heads up.......
check what... and how they plan to do it........

Elan man !
Thanks very much for your input - a very good checklist indeed.
I met with two Autoglass fitters around the car on Monday and they took a look at the workshop manual pages and told their boss they will not even start the job until they have the A pillar foam seals, one guy has done an Elan before and is a classic enthusiast.
They seem genuinely keen to do a decent job - it remains to be seen if Autoglass will even take it on, as apparently they have a strict rule about using genuine components and it seems ( according to their procurement guy ) the only A pillar foams available are reproductions.
This feels like a get out to me - I will keep the forum posted on developments !

The last time I looked the A pillar seals were available from lotus. Are they saying that Lotus don't have any? A quick call to a dealer will confirm. Or are they saying that Lotus don't sell genuine Lotus parts (which can't be true)

New Bronze screen installed today with all new A pillar seals and trims.
The two gents from Autoglass seem to have done a fine job.
A lot of tenacity and patience but I got what appears to be a good job in the end.
The guys said they will add the notes and photos( and there there are lots) to the Company tech know database.

Which bits did you have to provide and which did they supply?

Good question
Based upon the screen replacement section in the workshop manual, and the technician’s feed back they supplied and fitted everything except the corner trims at the top edge of the screen which were serviceable so were refitted.
We agreed this at the first visit.
So parts used
Screen ( they added extra black out area for the bonded mirror boss as the screen supplied has a smaller blacked out section.
Both A pillar drop glass foam seals which somehow they sourced two sets one pair from Lotus (?) and one set from SJ and I choose the genuine ones as they seemed marginally softer.
Top Trim
Side trims and screen edge rubbers
They had to go to the insurance company for approval, for the foams as these are not on the parts list in their database (initially declined)
I also got in contact with them and explained in no uncertain terms they better pay for these parts or write the car off as scrap.
It was at times very frustrating but as soon as I raised a formal complaint with the insurance company, I was given a person in Autoglass customer service to deal with and we took it one step at a time until all the parts were available to the technicians.

In total 5 screens were provided
2 wrong colour one of which was faulty
3 bronze 2 received damaged 1 OK ( now fitted )

It was a process that took patience but there was always a desire from Autoglass to get it right.
I am now happy !
