New Elan Owner - Door lock issue

Postby Richmmm » Tue 31.08.2021, 20:57

Hello all,

I am a new Elan owner, just bought a car! I have found that the drivers door lock is much stiffer than I would expect. It takes consisderable force to unlock the door - I am guessing this in not right?

Welcome!
Is it the same force if the door is open vs closed?
Is it the same force using the key in the tumbler vs the lock pull at the top of the door?
Does the auto-lock still work if you lock from the passenger side?

And now that you are a member, when you are logged in, you can see a link to the Manuals section in the navigation bar at the top of the site. Go ahead and download the Service Manual (aka your new bedtime page turner) and you can go to page 163 in the pdf and read about the locking mechanism. Could be door alignment, or some friction in the lock that some graphite spray would help, or maybe a stiff linkage pivot...

Have you tried oiling the key hole?

Had another look at the drivers door lock, i just tried to open it, but it was exxtreamly stiff and woundn't open. So I opened the passenger door instead. With the door open, it seems to take less force to operate the lock with the key.

I can hear a slight clunk from the door when I close it, maybe the door is slightly missaligned? (Checked there is no play in the hinges) Could this be a reason why the lock is so stiff?

I will keep looking...........On another topic, where are the door light switches?

I presume you mean the interior lights? Check the switch behind the mirror

The interior lights on the mirror can be switched on in 3 ways:
Switches on the mirror
Pull the main light switch out
Open a door. The door switches are part of the door lock mechanism.

Interior light switches part of the door lock mechanism......who would have thought that!

I am looking to put a lights on buzzzer on the car. hopefully i can find somewhere, where the door signal is available.

Tnx for the info. Rich

The S2 already has a lights on buzzer (in place of the courtesy light delay relay in the panel underneath the driver’s side dashboard)
