Rubber rawlnut fixing for dooryard

Postby daveinnorfolk » Wed 17.07.2024, 12:28

Hi, could anyone please tell me the size of rubber rawlnut that goes at the bottom of the door I need to order to refit my doorcard. Some I have seen are in "m" sizes and others mm's. Measuring an original seems to be 10mm in diameter but can not find one that size on the dealers parts lists. Thanks in advance.

if i remember correctly, they are meant to be M5.
but so far in my expeirnece, an M5 comes out, and a M6 size goes in, because the hole is too small for M5
the manual calls hem screw no 8 x 1''
with spire nut no 8

i suspect spire nuts are a good alternative, but in my case, i tried the rubber well nuts M6 and they didnt really hold anything toegher apropriately, so, what ive done (against the advise of other owners who certainly are very knowleagble) was to install M6 rivnuts against the fibreglass. if you install them like a hooligan you wil crack the fibreglass and make matters worse, but if your are tacktile, you may find them to work well, and 10 years later still hold the doorcards perfectly, (and somehow havent got any rust in the meanwhile

Not quite clear om your question which part number are you referring to?- I don't think that there are and rawlnuts at the bottom of the door but there are scrivetts which have a socket and a plastic screw.

Jaoa, a M5 rawlnut goes with an M5 setscrew, a No.8 screw is a self tapper.

The correct sized fittings are available from S J Sportscars, although I bought a bulk bag from eBay.

Your correct Simon, I Believe the was a change in the way the were fitted mid production.
The 91 SE cars I've done had rubber well nuts (like the OP description), but the 92 NA had the self tapping scrivets

I could not find this specific fitting documented in the earlier parts manual. And it's just a "means to an end" step in the door card removal, which makes it's alterations undocumented in any maintenance history.

I honestly believe the use of rivnuts is the most efficient means to secure the door cards, after multiple attempts with different rubber well nut sizes (including adding epoxy) the rivnuts did the job and so far hadn't cause me any trouble.
In my case the machine screws used are stainless as well as the washers that spread the pressure.

But has I mentioned, other owners who are certainly very knowledgeable did advise against my practice, and I do believe their advise is sound

The stuff I found in the 92 car was to my opinion inferior quality to a rawlnut installation that my SE had back in 2014.

This is a specific topic that's been bugging me for years because the wheel arch liners installation is of a very similar style and I haven't had the guts to put rivnuts there but the rubber ones just keep coming out repeatedly

Jack nuts are an option which I haven't tried but after seeing them used in the lips of the headlights pods made me wonder.

All in all, as long as the door card is secure no one (else) really cares,
I've removed one where a 3 inch wood screw was piercing through the fiberglass to hold the thing together. It worked, but certainly made me fear the worst was yet to come.

Yep, recently one of my wheelarch nuts kept turning w/out tightening so I found a plastic rivnut (left over MGTF135 days) slapped it in and it fitted so well that I wondered why Lotus didn't do it in the first place.

Dead easy to remove too, w/out thinking 'is it gonna turn continually when I do it up? :)

ps I'm still putting off removing those door cards to fit new speakers :( but at least I'm not worried about fitting rivnuts in that carpeted area.

pps I bought a box of different-sized rivnut fixings quite cheaply, I think from Halfords' or perhaps eBay. - Always useful to keep on the shelf...
