A once and for all permanent door sill leak prevention

Postby DublinBlueElan » Thu 06.11.2025, 22:45

My philosophy with my elan is don't try to stop the water coming in, because it will. Focus on letting it drain out!

I am running my elan with no footwell carpets like an Elise, just floor mats.
I have some strategic holes drilled in various places on the floor, have Jamie's one piece seals on the way and have reasonably new door weatherstrips too.

I have also modified the bottom of the door seals to stop them trapping water.
This hasn't worked however and I find water is spilling over the sills into the car.
Not anymore!
I have taken Lotus' A pillar drain idea and made it work elsewhere using a pair of fuel filler neck drains.
These can be found in any car in any breakers yard and are practically free.

I poured water on the sill and eyeballed the low point on the sill where most water was pooling, drilled a hole and shoved this in. Used a little bit of glue to keep it as flush as possible with the sill. I may look at countersinking the top but I don't need to.
I have fed the drain pipe down through the sill behind the outriggers and out one of the existing TSB drain holes on the lower part of the sill and cut to size leaving about an inch sticking out under the car.
Just like that, no more standing water on the sills, it's drained outside the car.
I'll take better pictures and probably a video at the weekend if you're struggling to picture what I've done.
