Brushes.?

Yo, my driver side window has packed up again after just 13 months of replacing the dame thing.Had it looked at and was told the brushes are f......d and cant be replaced..? not another 180 pound.. cheers.

Shouldn't of packed up after that short a time Jonny, perhaps the sliders wern't cleaned properly & motor pushing load crap up & down as well as the window ?

Got no idea.. all power to the window just cut dead. checked relays and fuses, all ok, had it looked at while having new alarm fitted and the guy said its the brushes.. cheers Paul.

I'm no expert on windows Jonny, but there are some small bushes that slide up & down in the runners, & i believe they are nylon, & i also believe they can wear or break up. Only brushes i know of are the ones that fit all the way along the top of the window, can't see as they could knacker your motor. The nylon bushes & runners work a lot better & easier when cleaned, maybe your bushes have had it ?

I was told the last time the bushes were f... when it packed up last time, just going on what this guy said.. sounds like he knows as much as me.. sweet f a. best i get on phone to sj and hand over more cash. cheers mate.

The motor brushes should not have gone after only one year. As Paul says, there are plastic bushes and they are only a few quid from Aftersales IIRC.

It would be worth checking to see exactly what your man thinks is wrong and maybe we can pull your door apart at Donny!

Have a look here and then plan (even expect) to lose a bit of skin on those knuckles!
Take off both door cards if necessary so that you can compare the good one to the bad. And also do some preventative maintenance to avoid a similar problem on the good window.
If the runners were all crapped-up then you could feasibly burn out your window motor.
Lesson for the future: if the window starts to stick then reach over and give it a helping hand (rather than just leaning on the button), and make a note to get in there with some cleaning cloths and WD40 ASAP.

I agree with Geoff. Hang onto your wonga at least til after Donny. We like sorting out problems. Last year Stevo even fitted some AB gear cables, then saved JimP who had just got stranded on the M1 with a similar problem!

Hi Johnny,

Ekapol's thread is a good place to start, and I'd suggest the following;

Strip the door down, and start with the lead that connects to the window, check it for power and makes sure everything is good to that point.

Next step remove the motor, gear mechanism and bow (leave the window in the door) and see if that works on its own.

Last off check how the glass slides on its brushes in the window rails.

That'll tell you which bit is buggered. The plastic pieces for the window can be found, the gear mechanism can be rebuilt, or replaced with Pug parts, as can the window motor itself. So everything can be rebuilt eventually.

Just remember to view it all as a chance to improve your door stripping skills, I can now have the whole mechanism sat on the workbench just half an hour after parking the car.

I still havent got round to doing anything, "lazy you say".... been very busy at work. Ive still got the door panel off since Donny.

Anyway.... the window motor needs rebuilding, not sure if it can be done Gonna take the motor out this weekend & take it to "bosch" and see what they say.
